Why Drop to One Ounce

Recoil is a function of payload weight and velocity together, and payload is the half most people never touch. Going from 1 1/8 ounces to one ounce at the same 1200 fps cuts felt recoil noticeably, and over a hundred registered targets or a full sporting course that difference shows up in your gun mount, your follow through and your score. This is the most underrated one ounce trap load decision a shooter can make.

The cost is about twelve percent fewer pellets, and that matters less than it sounds. A one ounce charge of number 7.5 still puts plenty of pellets in a thirty inch circle at forty yards, and the pattern is often slightly more uniform because a shorter shot column deforms fewer pellets on setback. Many shooters find their patterns improve when they drop payload rather than get worse.

Everything else is the same competition build. High antimony lead resists deformation through the forcing cone and choke, so more pellets stay round and stay in the pattern where they can break a target. The Podium wad is designed for the straight wall hull with a compression zone in the base that cushions the shot column at ignition, which is part of why this shell feels softer than the numbers alone suggest.

Honest Notes on One Ounce Loads

Pattern before you decide. A one ounce charge is not automatically worse than 1 1/8 ounces, but it is different, and the only honest way to know what Federal All American 1oz 12ga 7.5 shot does out of your gun and choke is to shoot paper at the distance you break targets. Some guns pattern one ounce loads beautifully and some do not.

Know your competition rules. Some registered disciplines cap payload weight and some do not, and a few events specify one ounce maximum. If you shoot international trap or certain sub gauge equivalent events, this may be the required load rather than an option.

This is not a handicap shell. At long yardage the reduced pellet count starts to tell, and the 1 1/8 ounce handicap load at 1250 fps is the better tool from the back fence. Use the one ounce load where the targets are inside about thirty five yards.

Finally, on cost. Competition shells are more expensive than promotional loads, and the difference over a casual season is small. If you shoot volume, the reduced recoil is worth more than the price gap, and the straight wall hulls reload well if you want to bring the cost down further.
