Description
The DPMS DR-15 5.56 is a 16-inch AR-15 with a mid-length gas system, a 13.5-inch M-LOK free float rail and B5 Systems furniture. It weighs 6.8 pounds and comes fitted with the parts most buyers upgrade first.
Mid-Length Gas on a 16-Inch Barrel
Most budget ARs use a carbine-length gas system because it is the cheapest configuration to build. Moving the gas port further out to a mid-length position lowers port pressure, which slows unlocking and softens the recoil impulse. That single change is why the DPMS DR-15 5.56 shoots more comfortably than most rifles at its price, and it is easier on the bolt and extractor over a long life.
13.5-Inch M-LOK Free Float Rail
The handguard free floats, meaning it attaches only at the receiver and never touches the barrel. Load a bipod or a sling hard against a non-free-float handguard and your point of impact moves; here it does not. At 13.5 inches it covers nearly the full barrel and leaves plenty of M-LOK real estate for a light, a laser and a hand stop.
Carpenter 158 Bolt and Full-Auto Carrier
The bolt is machined from Carpenter No. 158 steel to mil-spec, riding in a full-auto profile carrier. That extra carrier mass slows the cycle slightly and adds reliability, and it is the same configuration used in service rifles. These are the parts you cannot see and cannot easily inspect, which makes them the parts that matter most when comparing rifles.
B5 Systems Furniture
DPMS fits a B5 Bravo stock and a B5 premium grip rather than generic mil-spec parts. The Bravo is a genuinely better stock: a firmer lockup, a more comfortable cheek weld and integrated QD sling sockets. Buying those two parts separately would account for a meaningful share of the difference between this rifle and a bare-bones AR.
Forged Receivers and Panther Trigger
The upper is a forged 7075-T6 A3 flat top, giving a continuous rail for optics and back-up sights. The lower carries DPMS’s Panther Polished Trigger, which is a mil-spec trigger with the engagement surfaces polished, so it breaks noticeably cleaner than a standard unit. An A2-style flash hider sits on 1/2×28 threads at the muzzle, so a different muzzle device or a suppressor mount installs directly.
Size and Capacity
The DPMS DR-15 5.56 measures 32 inches overall and weighs 6.8 pounds bare. It feeds from standard AR-15 magazines and ships with a 30-round unit where state law allows.

Who Should Buy It
This is a strong first AR-15 and an equally strong general-purpose rifle. Home defense, training courses, hog hunting and range use are all well within what it is built for, and the mid-length gas system makes it pleasant to shoot all day.
The DPMS DR-15 5.56 uses a phosphate-lined mil-spec barrel rather than a match stainless one, so it is built for durability rather than benchrest precision. Iron sights are not included, so budget for an optic or back-up sights.
Shooters chasing sub-MOA accuracy should compare a stainless-barrelled rifle, and anyone wanting a duty-grade build should look at a BCM carbine in our catalog. Every firearm we list ships to your chosen FFL and is transferred in accordance with federal and state law.
