Description

The Buffalo Bore 41 Mag 170gr JHP is the fastest load Buffalo Bore builds for the 41 Remington Magnum. A 170 grain jacketed hollow point at 1650 fps produces roughly 1028 ft-lbs, and unlike the hard cast loads in the same line it is meant to open up rather than drive straight through. Twenty rounds per box, item 16C/20.

Buffalo Bore 41 Mag 170gr JHP Overview

The bullet is a conventional lead core jacketed hollow point at a weight that is light for the calibre. At 0.410 of an inch and 170 grains, this is the 41 Magnum equivalent of a 125 grain 357 load, and it is built for the same job.

Speed is what makes that work. A lead core hollow point opens readily once it is moving fast enough, and 1650 fps is comfortably past the threshold. What you get is immediate, violent expansion rather than a bullet that passes through quietly.

That puts the Buffalo Bore 41 Mag 170gr JHP at the opposite end of the line from the 230 grain Keith semi wadcutter and the 265 grain flat nose. Those are built for penetration through heavy bone. A high velocity 41 Remington Magnum load like this one is built for energy transfer, and the two jobs really do want different bullets.

41 Magnum Hollow Point Ammo Ballistics

1650 fps with a 170 grain bullet works out to roughly 1028 ft-lbs. Set that against the rest of the Buffalo Bore 41 Magnum range: the 210 grain JHP makes 1120 at 1550 fps, the 230 grain Keith makes 1074 at 1450, and the 265 grain flat nose makes 1072 at 1350.

All four land within about ninety foot pounds of each other, which tells you something useful. Energy is not what distinguishes these loads. Bullet behaviour on impact is, and the energy chart will not help you choose between them.

What this one does have is trajectory. At 1650 fps this 41 Magnum hollow point ammo shoots noticeably flatter than the heavy loads, which matters if you are taking a longer shot with a scoped revolver or a carbine. Across the ranges most people actually shoot a handgun, that advantage is small.

Why A 170 Grain JHP Magnum Bullet Trades Depth For Speed

A light fast bullet and a heavy slow one solve different problems, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with the wrong ammunition. This load is the answer when you want energy delivered quickly into something that is not very large or very heavily built.

Deer at revolver distances, coyotes, and two legged threats all fit that description. A 170 grain JHP magnum bullet arriving at 1650 fps expands aggressively and puts its energy to work in the first few inches, which is what produces a fast result on a thin skinned animal.

What it is not is a bear load or a hog load. Against heavy bone at an awkward angle a 170 grain JHP magnum bullet can come apart and stop short of anything vital, and that is exactly where the hard cast loads in this line belong instead.

There is also the recoil dividend. A 170 grain bullet produces a lighter recoil impulse than a 265 grain one even at higher velocity, because recoil scales with bullet mass. In a revolver most people find fast expanding revolver ammunition of this weight easier to shoot well.

Range Notes For This High Velocity 41 Remington Magnum Load

Confirm your zero with this exact load. A 170 grain bullet at 1650 fps shoots considerably flatter than the 210 and 230 grain loads most 41 Magnum sights get set up with, so expect a different point of impact and find it on paper.

Expect real recoil and real blast. This is a full power magnum load and it is not quiet or gentle, though it is noticeably easier on the hand than the heavy bullet loads in the same line.

Match the load to the animal. If you are hunting anything large or shooting in bear country, the 230 grain Keith or the 265 grain flat nose is the correct choice. A 41 Magnum hollow point at this speed is the wrong tool for those jobs.

Practise sensibly. A high velocity 41 Remington Magnum load is expensive and tiring to shoot, so sight in, confirm, and stop before fatigue starts costing you groups.
