Description

The Buffalo Bore Heavy 357 Mag 125gr JHP is the load that built the 357 Magnum’s reputation, loaded the way it used to be. A 125 grain jacketed hollow point at 1700 fps produces roughly 802 ft-lbs. Buffalo Bore says it is safe in any all steel 357 revolver including J frames, but not in lightweight alloy guns. Twenty rounds per box, item 19D/20.

Buffalo Bore Heavy 357 Mag 125gr JHP Overview

This is a conventional lead core jacketed hollow point driven very hard. There is nothing exotic about the bullet, and that is the point: the 125 grain 357 load earned its standing in the 1970s and 1980s with ordinary bullets at extraordinary speed, and most modern factory ammunition has quietly backed away from those velocities.

Buffalo Bore has not. At 1700 fps the Buffalo Bore Heavy 357 Mag 125gr JHP is loaded to what the cartridge was originally capable of rather than to what is comfortable, and the difference against a typical 357 Magnum 125 grain ammo offering running 1450 fps is about 220 foot pounds.

The compatibility note is unusually permissive and worth reading carefully. Buffalo Bore states this is safe in any all steel 357 revolver, and they specifically include J frames in that. What they warn against is lightweight alloy revolvers, where the recoil is severe enough to pull bullets forward out of their cases under recoil.

357 Magnum 125 Grain Ammo Ballistics

The published real gun figures cover a genuinely useful spread. A three inch Smith and Wesson J frame gives 1476 fps, a four inch L frame Mountain Gun gives 1603, a five inch Model 27 gives 1543, a six inch Ruger GP100 gives 1707, and an 18.5 inch Marlin 1894 gives 2298 fps.

Those work out to roughly 605, 713, 661, 809 and 1465 ft-lbs. The five inch Model 27 coming in below the four inch Mountain Gun is not an error, it is a reminder that cylinder gap and bore dimensions matter as much as barrel length.

The rifle figure is the one people underestimate. 2298 fps with a 125 grain bullet is about 1465 ft-lbs, which turns a lever action 357 into something far more capable than a pistol calibre carbine has any right to be.

Why The Full Power JHP Revolver Bullet Built A Reputation

The 125 grain 357 Magnum has a reputation that outstrips almost any other handgun load, and it is worth being careful about where that came from. It was built on police experience in an era when revolvers were standard issue and the ammunition was loaded to full pressure, and the statistical studies most often cited for it have been criticised on methodology ever since.

What is not in dispute is the physics. A 125 grain bullet at 1700 fps is doing something no service calibre autoloader does, and it does it with a bullet light enough to expand violently rather than simply passing through. That combination of speed and rapid expansion is what people are actually describing when they talk about this load.

The modern context matters too. Most factory 357 Magnum 125 grain ammo today is loaded well below these velocities, partly for lightweight revolvers and partly because nobody enjoys the recoil. If you have shot a box of ordinary 125 grain magnum and found it unremarkable, that is because it was.

The honest trade is blast and recoil. A full power JHP revolver bullet at this speed produces serious muzzle flash, a genuinely painful report, and recoil that most people will not want to practise with. If those matter to you, Buffalo Bore’s low flash 357 line is the better everyday choice, because a full power JHP revolver bullet you flinch through is worth less than a milder one you shoot well.

Safety Notes For This Heavy 357 Magnum Defense Ammunition

Read the alloy warning properly, because it is not a pressure warning. Buffalo Bore says the ammunition itself is safe, but that in a lightweight alloy revolver the recoil is severe enough to cause crimp jump, where bullets in the unfired chambers work forward out of their cases and tie up the cylinder. That will stop the gun mid string.

All steel guns are fine, J frames included, which is a more generous statement than most makers of heavy 357 Magnum defense ammunition will give you. If your revolver is scandium, aluminium or titanium framed, choose a lighter load.

Expect real flash and blast. This high velocity 357 hollow point is not low flash ammunition, and fired indoors or at dusk it will affect your vision. Buffalo Bore builds a separate flash suppressed 357 line for exactly that reason.

Confirm your zero. A 125 grain bullet at 1700 fps shoots much flatter than the 158 grain loads most 357 sights were regulated around, so expect a different point of impact and find it on paper rather than assuming.

High Velocity 357 Hollow Point Availability

Manufacturer details are on the Buffalo Bore site. For a lightweight alloy revolver, use the low flash line instead: the 357 Mag 125gr XPB low flash or the 140gr version. For an all copper full power load, see the heavy 357 Mag 125gr XPB.
