Description

Buffalo Bore 30-06 168gr TTSX Lead Free Buffalo-Barnes supercharged 30-06 hunting ammo box and cartridges

Buffalo Bore 30-06 168gr TTSX Lead Free is Buffalo Bore item 40B, a Buffalo-Barnes supercharged load for the 30-06 Springfield. It drives the 168 grain Barnes Tipped TSX all copper bullet at about 2,900 fps, and it comes in a 20 round box. Buffalo Bore calls it the do-all 30-06 load for North American hunting.

Who Makes Buffalo Bore 30-06 168gr TTSX Lead Free

Buffalo Bore Ammunition is a Montana company that publishes velocities from ordinary production rifles rather than laboratory test barrels. Its Buffalo-Barnes range pairs Barnes monolithic projectiles with loads that push each cartridge to its practical limit.

The Tipped TSX is a polymer tipped, all copper hollow point. With no lead core, it holds nearly all of its weight as it expands into petals, and then keeps driving. Buffalo Bore says this 168 grain bullet penetrates about as deeply as most 200 grain premium partition style bullets, while offering a flatter trajectory and lighter recoil.

For that reason the company describes Buffalo Bore 30-06 168gr TTSX Lead Free as suited to anything from antelope to Alaska Yukon moose and bison. For lighter game such as deer and antelope only, Buffalo Bore offers a separate 30-06 load, item 40A.

Specifications and Performance

Buffalo Bore advertises Buffalo Bore 30-06 168gr TTSX Lead Free at 2,900 fps. Its real-world results include 3,028 fps from a Kimber 8400 Montana with a 24 inch barrel, 2,977 fps from a 1990s Winchester All Terrain with a 22 inch barrel and 2,949 fps from a 1950s Winchester Featherweight with a 22 inch barrel.

Buffalo Bore states that this ammunition is designed for use in all 30-06 rifles in normal operating condition. The company also publishes exterior ballistic charts for a range of muzzle velocities on its website, which is useful when you build a drop chart from your own chronograph data.

Recoil from a 168 grain load is noticeably milder than from the 180 and 200 grain loads many hunters use for elk and moose in a 30-06. That makes it easier to shoot accurately from field positions, which matters more than a few hundred foot-pounds of energy on paper.

Field Notes

Monolithic bullets are longer than lead core bullets of the same weight and often shoot to a different point of impact. Confirm your zero with Buffalo Bore 30-06 168gr TTSX Lead Free before the season, and do not assume it will print where your previous load did.

A monolithic bullet needs enough impact velocity to expand fully. That is rarely a problem with a fast 30-06 load inside normal hunting ranges, but at very long range check Barnes guidance on minimum expansion velocity for the TTSX.

Barnes recommends cleaning copper fouling from the bore periodically when shooting all copper bullets, especially if accuracy begins to drift. A copper solvent and a few patches between range sessions are usually enough.

California and some federal and state lands require non-lead ammunition for hunting. This load meets that requirement. Always check the current rules for the area and species you plan to hunt.

Store ammunition cool and dry. Rifle ammunition requires buyers to be at least 18, and some states add background checks or other rules for ammunition purchases.
