Browning Hells Canyon LR 7mm Rem Mag Overview
The X-Bolt 2 is the newest version of the Browning flagship bolt action, with a redesigned receiver and bolt. The Hells Canyon McMillan LR is the heavier, long range member of the family. At over eight pounds it is not a featherweight, but that weight, the brake and the heavy contour barrel make it steady and easy to spot your own hits with at long distance.
McMillan Game Scout Stock
McMillan is one of the best known names in hand laid composite stocks. The Game Scout has a vertical grip, a high comb for a scoped rifle, two QD sling cups plus a stud, and a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad. Browning lists a 13 5/8 inch length of pull. The stock is not adjustable, so check the fit if you can.
Fluted Heavy Sporter Barrel
The 26 inch steel barrel is fluted, uses a heavy sporter contour and has a 1:8 twist, which stabilizes the long, heavy bullets that make the 7mm Rem Mag shine at distance. A heavier barrel also holds its point of impact better as it heats up.
Recoil Hawg Brake and Threads
The muzzle is threaded 5/8-24 and wears a Recoil Hawg muzzle brake. Brakes cut felt recoil a lot, but they are loud, so always wear hearing protection. You can also mount a suppressor, which is an NFA item that requires an approved ATF Form 4 and registration and is not legal in every state. MAG5 does not sell NFA items.
20 MOA Picatinny Rail and Plus Magazine
A 20 MOA Picatinny rail comes on the rifle, which gives your scope extra elevation travel for long shots and accepts standard Picatinny rings. The Plus Magazine System is a detachable box magazine that holds 5 rounds of 7mm Rem Mag.
The 7mm Rem Mag Cartridge
The 7mm Remington Magnum delivers flat trajectories and strong energy for elk, mule deer and open country hunting, with recoil that most shooters handle well, especially with the muzzle brake.
Choosing a Scope
A rifle like this deserves glass with exposed or capped turrets and a reticle you trust at distance. The 20 MOA rail means you can zero at 100 yards and still have plenty of elevation left.
Cleaning and Care
Clean the bore after each range session and remove the brake occasionally to clean the threads. Wipe the rifle down after a wet hunt.
State Laws
Bolt action rifles are legal in most places, but hunting rules on calibers, seasons and suppressor use vary. Check your state game laws. Pennsylvania buyers can transfer at our Collegeville shop or at any FFL.
