Description

The Beretta 92FS Brigadier in 9mm, part number J92F700CA, is the heavy slide 92 in its black Bruniton finish, built to California’s ten round configuration. The barrel is 4.90 inches, the frame is black alloy, the slide is serrated steel, and the grips are Hogue wraparound rubber. Brigadier is a structural change rather than a trim level. The slide is physically thicker through the locking block area, which puts more steel where the gun works hardest and adds weight where it settles the muzzle.

This is the California compliant build, so it ships with ten round magazines and is configured for sale in that state.

What the Brigadier slide actually changes

The extra slide mass slows the cycle slightly and brings the muzzle back down sooner, so the second shot arrives with the sights closer to where you left them.

Beretta thickened the slide after service use showed where the standard one was working hardest. The result is more steel around the locking block cut, which is the part that carries the load.

The Brigadier slide takes a dovetailed front sight, so sight changes are a gunsmith job rather than a factory only option. On the standard slide the front sight is integral.

The cost is a few ounces and a slightly wider profile, neither of which matters on a gun that was never going to be concealed.

Bruniton, Hogue grips and the California configuration

Bruniton is Beretta’s baked on black finish. It is tougher than bluing and more forgiving of holster wear, which is why it ended up on the service guns.

The Hogue wraparound grip fills the backstrap and carries finger grooves further round than the factory panels, which suits larger hands and softens an already mild impulse.

Ten plus one is the California configuration. Buyers outside the state who want fifteen should look at the standard capacity Brigadier.

Everything else is unchanged: open slide, falling locking block, ambidextrous safety and decocker, reversible magazine release.

Cartridge dimensions and pressures are standardized by SAAMI. For practice we stock 115 grain 9mm brass cased full metal jacket, which is the load most 92s are happiest on. This gun is built to the California configuration; buyers outside California who want full capacity should compare the standard Brigadier, the stainless Brigadier is the Brigadier Inox CA, and the standard slide guns are the 92FS and 92FS Inox. Check your own state and local rules before ordering, since capacity limits vary and we cannot advise on them.

Why it is worth considering

  • A heavier Brigadier slide, which settles the muzzle sooner between shots.
  • A dovetailed front sight, so sights can be changed later.
  • Bruniton finish, which is tougher than bluing and takes holster wear better.
  • Hogue wraparound rubber grips, which suit larger hands.
  • The same open slide action that made the 92 what it is.

Who it suits

This suits a California buyer who wants the heavy slide 92, or anyone outside the state who prefers a ten round gun and does not mind the weight. It is a full sized service pistol and a poor concealment choice. Every handgun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer.

Beretta 92FS Brigadier 9mm pistol with black Bruniton slide, alloy frame and Hogue wraparound grips

Living with a Beretta 92FS Brigadier

These pistols reward being left alone. The locking block is the one part that genuinely wears, and Beretta sells it as a service item; anyone putting real volume through the gun should plan on replacing it somewhere past ten thousand rounds rather than waiting for it to crack. Recoil and hammer springs are cheap and worth refreshing at the same interval.

Magazines matter more than most owners expect. Factory 92 magazines are well made, but the finish on older ones can drag and that is the usual cause of a feeding complaint on a gun that is otherwise fine. Ten round California magazines and full capacity magazines share the same body, so anything you buy now will fit the gun for as long as you own it.

Beyond that there is very little to do. Keep the rails lightly oiled, keep the locking block clean, and the gun will comfortably outlast the person who bought it.
