Description
The Barrett MRAD SMR 338 Norma Grey is the Tungsten Grey Cerakote version of Barrett’s Single Mission Rifle, the deliberately simplified member of the MRAD family. Receiver and fixed stock are both finished in tungsten grey, with a black Magpul MOE grip as the only contrast, and the whole rifle is built around one cartridge rather than a set of interchangeable barrels. That is the trade the SMR asks you to make.
Barrett fixed the caliber, free floated the barrel and removed the folding hinge, which takes close to two and a half pounds and an inch of length out of the rifle and lets them put a 0.75 MOA accuracy guarantee on it. If you have already settled on 338 Norma Magnum, you are giving up flexibility you were never going to use.
What the Barrett MRAD SMR 338 Norma Grey Offers
Tungsten grey is the least common of the three factory finishes and the most neutral. It does not vanish into dry country the way Flat Dark Earth does, and it does not read as aggressively as black, which is part of why it tends to be the finish serious match shooters pick.
Under the Cerakote the rifle matches its siblings exactly: a 26 inch fluted barrel with a 1:9.4 twist, a free floated handguard, a 21.75 inch top rail carrying 10 MOA of cant, and a fixed stock with a vertically adjustable cheek piece. Weight is 12.3 pounds and overall length is 48.5 inches.
The barrel is fixed rather than user changeable. This is the defining constraint of the SMR line and it deserves to be stated plainly: one receiver, one chambering, for the life of the rifle. If you want to move between calibers, buy the standard MRAD instead.
Recoil, Ammunition Supply and Range Etiquette
338 Norma Magnum kicks. The rifle’s mass and its suppressor capable muzzle brake absorb a great deal of it, but a long prone string is still work and most shooters will not put a hundred rounds through one in an afternoon. The brake also pushes a lot of blast out sideways, which makes the rifle genuinely unpleasant for anyone on the bench next to you.
Ammunition is the real planning constraint. This is a long range match and military cartridge, not something a general sporting goods counter stocks. Several manufacturers load it and brass is available for handloaders, but you will be ordering in advance and paying meaningfully more per round than you would for 338 Lapua.
Barrel life on a fast 338 is finite. Treat the barrel as a consumable with a service life measured in low thousands of rounds rather than a lifetime component, and factor a replacement into the cost of ownership before you commit.

Who it suits
This 338 Norma Magnum rifle suits the long range competitor who has committed to one cartridge and wants the lightest, tightest version of the MRAD chassis behind it. It is a serious match rifle and a capable large game rifle at distance, and the wrong purchase if you expect to change calibers later.
Ammunition, Optics and Transfer Notes for the Barrett MRAD SMR 338 Norma Grey
338 Norma Magnum was designed because 338 Lapua runs out of usable case capacity once the longest, highest ballistic coefficient bullets are seated properly. The shorter, fatter Norma case lets heavy 300 grain class projectiles sit where they should and still feed from a magazine. Commercial cartridge specifications are published by SAAMI.
Match the optic to the rifle. The 21.75 inch rail carries 10 MOA of built in cant so a first focal plane scope with real elevation travel still has adjustment in hand at distance. Rings tall enough to clear a large objective and a scope level are both worth budgeting for, since cant error grows into a large miss long before this cartridge runs out of reach.
The same rifle is listed in black Cerakote and in Flat Dark Earth if either suits you better. The rest of our inventory is on the MAG5 Firearms shop page.
