Description

The Barrett MRAD SMR 338 Norma FDE is the Flat Dark Earth version of Barrett’s Single Mission Rifle, a deliberately simplified take on the MRAD chassis built around one cartridge and nothing else. The receiver and the fixed stock both wear Flat Dark Earth Cerakote, with a Magpul MOE grip in black providing the only contrast. Where the standard MRAD sells modularity, the SMR sells the opposite.

Barrett fixed the caliber, free floated the barrel and dropped the folding hinge, and the result is a rifle roughly two and a half pounds lighter and an inch shorter, carrying a 0.75 MOA accuracy guarantee. For a shooter who has already decided on 338 Norma Magnum, that is a straightforward trade in the right direction.

Why Choose the Barrett MRAD SMR 338 Norma FDE

The finish is the obvious difference and it is not purely cosmetic. Flat Dark Earth Cerakote disappears against dry grass, sand and open country in a way black never will, which matters if the rifle spends its life prone in the open rather than on a covered firing line.

Underneath the color the rifle is identical to its black and grey siblings: a 26 inch fluted barrel with a 1:9.4 twist, a free floated handguard, a 21.75 inch top rail with 10 MOA of cant, and a fixed stock with a vertically adjustable cheek piece. It weighs 12.3 pounds and runs 48.5 inches overall.

The barrel is fixed, not user changeable. That is the defining limitation of the SMR line and it should be understood before purchase. If you want to move between chamberings on one receiver, the standard MRAD is the rifle you want; if you want the lightest, tightest version of this chassis in one caliber, this is it.

Recoil, Ammunition and Living With a 338 Norma

This cartridge has real recoil. Twelve and a half pounds of rifle and a suppressor capable muzzle brake take most of the sting out, but a long string from a bipod is still work, and the brake redirects a great deal of blast sideways. Anyone shooting next to you at a public range will notice, and hearing protection is not optional for spotters.

Ammunition is the practical constraint. 338 Norma Magnum is a long range match and military cartridge rather than a sporting counter round. Several manufacturers load it and brass is obtainable, but you will be ordering ahead rather than buying on the way to the range, and the cost per round is well above 338 Lapua.

The muzzle ships threaded under a protector with a suppressor capable brake fitted. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items, so a suppressor would be a separate purchase requiring ATF approval, a tax stamp and a wait measured in months, and it is not legal in every state.

Who it suits

This 338 Norma Magnum rifle suits the shooter who has committed to one cartridge and wants the simplest version of the MRAD chassis behind it, in a finish built for open ground. It is a strong long range match and large game rifle, and the wrong choice if you expect to swap calibers later.

Ammunition, Optics and Transfer Notes for the Barrett MRAD SMR 338 Norma FDE

338 Norma Magnum exists because 338 Lapua runs short of case capacity once you seat the longest, highest ballistic coefficient bullets. The Norma case is shorter and fatter, which lets heavy 300 grain class projectiles sit out where they belong and still fit a magazine. Commercial specifications are published by SAAMI. Sort out a reliable ammunition supply before the rifle arrives rather than after.

Give it a scope that matches the rifle. The 21.75 inch rail carries 10 MOA of built in cant, which is there so a first focal plane optic with real elevation travel still has adjustment left at distance. Rings tall enough for a large objective and a scope level are both worth the money, because a small cant error turns into a large miss well before you reach this cartridge’s limits.

The same rifle is listed in black Cerakote if you prefer it, and if you want the quick change barrel and folding stock instead the Barrett MRAD in 7mm PRC is the modular option. The rest of our inventory is on the MAG5 Firearms shop page. The Barrett MRAD SMR 338 Norma FDE ships to a licensed dealer of your choosing, where you will complete a 4473 and a NICS check before taking it home.
