Description
The Barrett MRAD SMR 308 24in is the long barrel version of Barrett Single Mission Rifle, finished in Flat Dark Earth. Where the 17 inch SMR is built to be moved, this one is built to reach: 24 inches of fluted barrel with a 1:8 twist, a fixed stock and a 0.75 MOA accuracy guarantee from the factory. SMR stands for Single Mission Rifle and the name is the whole specification.
Barrett fixed the caliber, free floated the barrel and removed the folding hinge from the standard MRAD, and what came back was lighter, slimmer, cheaper and measurably more accurate. For a shooter who has settled on 308 Winchester, that is the right set of compromises.
Why 24 Inches Matters on the Barrett MRAD SMR 308 24in
308 Winchester was developed around barrels in this length class, and 24 inches is where published load data and factory ballistics actually apply. Against the 17 inch version you gain roughly 100 to 150 feet per second depending on the load, which pushes the transonic transition further out and puts real energy back on target at distance.
The barrel is fluted, which sheds weight and surface area without much cost in stiffness. Barrett lists the 308 SMR between 10.6 and 12.0 pounds and between 39.5 and 46.5 inches depending on barrel length; this configuration sits at the long, heavier end of that range and balances well off a bipod.
It is also free floated and fixed. There is no user changeable barrel system, which is the defining SMR limitation: one receiver, one chambering. If you want to move between calibers, the standard MRAD is the rifle to buy instead.
Chassis, Optics and Practical Notes
The stock is fixed but the cheek rest adjusts vertically without tools, and the grip is a Magpul MOE that swaps for any AR pattern grip in a couple of minutes. Between those two adjustments most shooters can get the rifle to fit properly.
The top rail runs 21.75 inches with 10 MOA of built in cant, which is well judged for the distances a 308 is actually shot at and long enough to position a scope where your head naturally falls rather than where the rings allow.
Flat Dark Earth Cerakote is the practical finish for open ground. It will burnish at the bipod feet and other contact points over time, which shows more on a light colour than on black, and most owners treat that as honest wear rather than damage.

Who it suits
This suits the long range shooter who has committed to 308 Winchester and wants the most accurate, longest reaching version of the SMR. It is a strong club match and field rifle. If you need to move the rifle in and out of vehicles constantly, the 17 inch version is the better tool.

Ammunition and Transfer Notes for the Barrett MRAD SMR 308 24in
308 Winchester is the most thoroughly supported centerfire rifle cartridge in North America after 223. Match, hunting and bulk practice ammunition are available everywhere, brass and dies are cheap, and load development is exhaustively documented. Cartridge and chamber standards are published by SAAMI, so anything marked 308 Winchester is safe in this barrel.
On a rifle carrying a 0.75 MOA guarantee, the ammunition is where most of the variation will come from. Factory match loads from the major makers will generally hold that standard; bulk practice ammunition will not, and the fair test of the rifle is the former. A 175 grain match bullet is the usual choice for distance work out of a 24 inch barrel, with 168 grain loads better suited to shorter ranges.
The same rifle is listed in Flat Dark Earth with the 17 inch barrel if you want the compact version, and the standard MRAD in 308 is the modular alternative with a user changeable barrel.
