Description
The Barrett MRAD SMR 308 Tungsten is the long barrel Single Mission Rifle in Tungsten Grey Cerakote: 24 inches of fluted, free floated barrel in 308 Winchester behind a fixed stock, with a 0.75 MOA accuracy guarantee from the factory. Grey tends to be the finish serious match shooters choose, sitting between the black and Flat Dark Earth guns without committing to either. The SMR is Barrett admitting that not every buyer needs a rifle that changes calibers.
Fixing the barrel, free floating it and deleting the folding hinge produced something lighter, slimmer, cheaper and more accurate than the standard MRAD. If you have settled on one cartridge, that is the better deal.
What 24 Inches Buys on the Barrett MRAD SMR 308 Tungsten
Twenty four inches is the barrel length 308 Winchester load data and factory ballistics actually assume. Against the 17 inch SMR you pick up roughly 100 to 150 feet per second depending on the load, which matters at the distances this configuration is bought for.
The barrel is fluted to shed weight and surface area without giving up much stiffness. Barrett lists the 308 SMR between 10.6 and 12.0 pounds and between 39.5 and 46.5 inches across the range; this one sits at the long, heavier end, which is what makes it settle properly on a bipod.
It is fixed, not user changeable. That is the SMR bargain stated plainly: one receiver, one chambering, for the life of the rifle. Anyone who wants to move between calibers should buy the standard MRAD instead.
Chassis, Rail and Ownership Notes
The fixed stock carries a vertically adjustable cheek rest, and the grip is a Magpul MOE, so fitting the rifle to your face and hand is a few minutes of work with a hex key rather than a gunsmithing exercise.
The top rail runs 21.75 inches with 10 MOA of built in cant. That is a well judged figure for 308 distances and long enough to let you place a scope where your head naturally lands.
Tungsten Grey Cerakote is hard wearing and shows handling marks less obviously than Flat Dark Earth while staying less conspicuous than black. It is the finish that ages best of the three.

Why it is worth considering
- Twenty four inches is where 308 Winchester ballistics actually apply

- Fluted free floated barrel that settles well on a bipod
- Lighter, slimmer and cheaper than a standard MRAD
Who it suits
This suits the club match and field shooter who has committed to 308 Winchester and wants the longest reaching, most accurate version of the SMR. If the rifle spends its life going in and out of vehicles, the 17 inch version is the better tool.

Ammunition and Transfer Notes for the Barrett MRAD SMR 308 Tungsten
308 Winchester is the best supported centerfire rifle cartridge in North America after 223. Match, hunting and bulk practice loads are on shelves everywhere, brass and dies are cheap, and load development is thoroughly documented. Cartridge and chamber standards are published by SAAMI, so anything marked 308 Winchester is safe in this barrel.
With a 0.75 MOA guarantee on the rifle, ammunition becomes the variable. Factory match loads from the major manufacturers will generally hold that standard and bulk practice ammunition will not, which is worth separating in your expectations before you blame the barrel. A 175 grain match bullet is the usual pick for distance out of 24 inches; 168 grain loads are better suited to shorter ranges.
The same rifle is listed in Flat Dark Earth, the 17 inch version in the same grey is the compact option, and more of our inventory is on the MAG5 Firearms shop page. This rifle ships to a licensed dealer of your choosing, where you will complete a 4473 and a NICS check before taking it home.
