The Barrett MRAD SMR 308 FDE is the Flat Dark Earth version of Barrett Single Mission Rifle in its most compact form: a 17 inch free floated barrel in 308 Winchester behind a fixed stock. The SMR exists because not everyone needs the modularity the standard MRAD sells, and Barrett was honest enough to build a version that admits it. Fix the caliber, free float the barrel, delete the folding hinge, and what comes back is a lighter, slimmer rifle carrying a 0.75 MOA accuracy guarantee at a lower price.
For a shooter who has already decided on 308 Winchester, that is a trade in the right direction.
Why the Barrett MRAD SMR 308 FDE Makes Sense
Flat Dark Earth is the practical finish for open country. In dry grass or on sand a black rifle is an obvious shape; in FDE it is not. The Cerakote will burnish at the bipod feet and other contact points over time, which shows more on a light colour, and most owners treat that as character.
The barrel is fixed rather than user changeable. That is the defining SMR limitation and it should be clear before purchase: one receiver, one chambering. If you expect to move between calibers, buy the standard MRAD instead.
Barrett lists the 308 SMR between 10.6 and 12.0 pounds and between 39.5 and 46.5 inches depending on barrel length. This 17 inch version sits at the short, light end, which is what makes it genuinely usable from a vehicle, a blind or a barricade.
Stock, Brake and Shooting Notes
The stock is fixed but the cheek rest adjusts vertically, and the grip is a Magpul MOE, so swapping it for whatever AR pattern grip suits your hand is a two minute job with a hex key.
A two port muzzle brake is fitted. In 308 the brake is less about taming recoil, which was never severe, and more about holding the reticle steady enough to call your own shots. The cost is noise: it is louder for anyone standing next to you.
The top rail runs 21.75 inches with 10 MOA of built in cant, which is a sensible figure for the ranges a 308 is actually used at and long enough to position nearly any scope comfortably.

Ammunition and Transfer Notes for the Barrett MRAD SMR 308 FDE
308 Winchester is the easiest serious rifle cartridge in the country to feed. Match, hunting and bulk practice ammunition sit on shelves everywhere, brass and dies are cheap, and load data is exhaustively documented. Cartridge and chamber standards are published by SAAMI, so anything marked 308 Winchester is safe in this barrel.
A short barrel costs roughly 100 to 150 feet per second against a 24 inch tube. Inside 800 yards that is academic; past it a longer barrel is the better tool, and on a fixed barrel rifle that decision is made when you buy rather than later. Heavier match bullets suit a 17 inch 308 best, with a 175 grain load holding velocity noticeably better downrange than a 168.
The muzzle is threaded under the brake. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items, so a suppressor would be a separate purchase requiring ATF approval, a tax stamp and its own transfer, and it is not legal everywhere.
