Description

The Barrett Model 99 50 BMG 29in is the lightest and handiest rifle Barrett builds in this calibre, and it gets there by being a single shot. No magazine, no gas system, no recoil operated barrel travel: one round loaded by hand into a fixed breech behind a 29 inch fluted barrel. At 23 pounds and 47 inches overall it is ten pounds lighter and ten inches shorter than a semi automatic Model 82A1. That weight saving is the headline, but the reason serious shooters buy a Model 99 is accuracy.

A receiver that only has to lock a barrel and contain pressure can be built stiffer than one that also has to cycle, and the Model 99 has a reputation among large bore shooters that the semi automatics do not quite match.

Why the Barrett Model 99 50 BMG 29in Is the Practical Choice

The 29 inch fluted barrel is the standard length for 50 BMG and the one the cartridge published ballistics assume. Fluting takes weight out without giving up much stiffness, which is how Barrett gets a rifle in this calibre down to 23 pounds.

Forty seven inches overall is the shortest the Model 99 comes, and on a rifle this size ten inches is not a detail. It is the difference between a gun you can get into a vehicle and case sensibly, and one that needs a plan.

A match quality trigger comes as standard, along with a 13.75 inch rail carrying 27 MOA of built in cant, a three port high efficiency muzzle brake and a rear hand grip that accepts an adjustable monopod.

The Single Shot Trade and What 50 BMG Costs

One round at a time is the honest limitation. The bolt is lifted, the case is pulled by hand and a fresh round is fed for every shot. For deliberate long range work that costs nothing at all, and the fixed breech is the reason the rifle shoots the way it does. For anything needing a fast second shot, the semi automatic Model 82A1 is the right rifle.

50 BMG is priced per round rather than per box when you buy match grade ammunition. Surplus and steel case is cheaper and much less consistent, and in a rifle of this quality the ammunition is almost always what limits the group rather than the barrel.

The three port brake is very effective and correspondingly loud, throwing blast sideways. Many public ranges either prohibit large bore rifles or confine them to a dedicated bay. Call before you drive out.

Why it is worth considering

  • The lightest 50 BMG Barrett builds, at 23 pounds
  • Forty seven inches overall, ten inches shorter than a semi automatic Barrett 50
  • A fixed breech single shot action, which is where the accuracy comes from
  • Match quality trigger and a 27 MOA rail as standard
  • A 29 inch fluted barrel, the length 50 BMG ballistics are built around

Who it suits

This suits the shooter who wants a 50 BMG that can actually be carried and stored, and who values group size over follow up shots. It is also the sensible entry into the calibre: cheaper than the semi automatics and, for most shooting, more accurate.

Ammunition, Optics and Transfer Notes for the Barrett Model 99 50 BMG 29in

50 BMG reached civilian shooters from the military and the supply still reflects that. Match grade loads come from a handful of manufacturers; surplus and steel case is cheaper and far less consistent, and lot to lot variation will show up on paper long before the rifle does. Commercial cartridge standards are published by SAAMI. Budget for good ammunition or the rifle cannot show you what it can do.

The rail is 13.75 inches, shorter than the one on the semi automatic Barretts, so measure eye relief before committing to a mount. The 27 MOA of built in cant exists so a scope with generous internal elevation still has travel left at long range; pick an optic that can actually use it.

Legality is worth confirming before ordering: 50 BMG rifles are prohibited in California and restricted in some municipalities. The same rifle is listed in 416 Barrett if you want the flatter shooting proprietary round, and our M82A1 is the semi automatic alternative. More stock sits on the MAG5 Firearms shop page. This rifle ships to a licensed dealer of your choosing, where you will complete a 4473 and a NICS check.
