Description
The Barnes VOR-TX Safari 416 Rem 400gr TSX FB is the expanding half of the Barnes dangerous game lineup for the 416 Remington Magnum. An all copper Triple Shock X leaves the muzzle at roughly 2420 fps carrying about 5203 ft-lbs of energy. That is more than twice the energy of a 30-06 and it is delivered by a bullet that expands to well over half an inch and still penetrates. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX Safari 416 Rem 400gr TSX FB Overview
This is the soft you load first in a magazine for buffalo, or the load you carry for lion and big bear. The projectile is machined from solid copper, so under the extreme stress of a heavy bone impact at close range there is no lead core to separate and no jacket to strip away.
The hollow nose peels back into four sharp copper petals that reach roughly double the original diameter and remain attached to the shank. On a 416 caliber bullet that is an enormous frontal area, and weight retention stays close to 100 percent, which is what lets it keep driving after it opens.
400 Grain TSX Flat Base Performance
A flat base is the correct design here. With a 0.392 ballistic coefficient this bullet is not intended for distance, and dangerous game shots are measured in tens of yards rather than hundreds. A flat base also loads concentrically and feeds cleanly from a controlled round feed magazine.
Barnes machines relief grooves into the bearing surface of the Barnes VOR-TX Safari 416 Rem 400gr TSX projectile. With this much copper in contact with the rifling those grooves matter a great deal, lowering pressure and reducing the fouling a long solid bullet would otherwise leave behind.
Why Hunters Choose 416 Remington Magnum Ammo
The 416 Remington Magnum was built to duplicate the 416 Rigby in a standard length magnum action, and it does exactly that at considerably higher pressure. For hunters travelling to Africa it is a far more practical proposition than a Rigby, because the rifles are lighter, cheaper and fit actions that are widely available.
In Alaska and coastal British Columbia the same 416 Remington Magnum ammo is a serious brown bear proposition. It is more gun than most people need for anything on this continent, and exactly the right amount of gun for the few situations where it is not.
Recoil is genuinely heavy. A rifle in the ten pound class with a well fitted stock and a quality pad is not optional equipment, and practice from field positions matters far more than bench groups with a cartridge like this.

Range Notes For This All Copper Dangerous Game Bullet
Zero with the exact load you intend to hunt. Many hunters running a dangerous game rifle load softs first and solids behind them, and the two will not necessarily share a point of impact, so confirm both if you plan to mix them in one magazine.
Feed test the full magazine before you travel. A flat nose copper bullet has a different profile than the round nose ammunition some older controlled round feed actions were regulated with, and you do not want to discover a feeding problem in front of a buffalo.
Copper needs velocity to open, and at 2420 fps the Barnes VOR-TX Safari 416 Rem 400gr TSX expands reliably at every distance this cartridge is realistically used. Store the ammunition cool and dry, and check it after a long flight in a hold.
