Description
The Barnes VOR-TX 416 Rem 400gr Solid is the non expanding half of the Barnes Safari line for the 416 Remington Magnum, and it does a completely different job than the TSX softpoint that shares its box weight and velocity. It leaves the muzzle at roughly 2420 fps carrying about 5203 ft-lbs, and it is built to go through an elephant skull or the length of a buffalo rather than to open up. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX 416 Rem 400gr Solid Round Nose Overview
A note on the name first. This load is a Round Nose Banded Solid, item 22018. Some listings describe it as bonded, which is a different construction entirely and not what this is. A bonded bullet has a lead core chemically fused to a jacket and is designed to expand. This one has no lead and does not expand at all.
The projectile is turned from solid copper alloy with relief bands machined around the shank. Those bands reduce bearing surface and pressure, and the flat meplat on the round nose profile keeps the bullet tracking in a straight line through heavy muscle and bone instead of tumbling or veering.
400 Grain Banded Solid Performance
A 400 grain banded solid is measured by penetration, not by expansion or energy transfer. Where the TSX opens to double diameter and dumps energy in the first foot of tissue, this bullet drives end to end through an animal and exits. On a frontal brain shot or a raking shot on buffalo, that is the only behavior that works.
Because it is matched to the softpoint at 2420 fps, the two loads can be carried together. Many hunters load softs first with solids behind them, which is exactly the scenario this pairing was designed for.
Why Hunters Choose 416 Remington Magnum Solid Ammo
Most African jurisdictions that permit buffalo and elephant require a minimum calibre and, in several cases, solids for elephant. This 416 Remington Magnum solid ammo exists to meet that requirement with a modern lead free projectile rather than a traditional steel jacketed solid.
It is worth being clear about what a solid is not for. It will pass through a plains game animal leaving a narrow wound channel and very little energy transfer, which is why it is a poor choice for kudu, zebra or anything you expect to drop. Use the softpoint for that and keep solids for the job they were built for.
Recoil is heavy. A ten pound rifle with a well fitted stock is the right tool, and practice from field positions matters far more than bench accuracy with a cartridge used at these distances.

Range Notes For This Non Expanding Dangerous Game Bullet
Confirm point of impact against your softpoint load. Barnes matches the two at the muzzle, but individual rifles do not always agree, and if you are loading softs and solids in the same magazine you need to know whether they print together at your zero distance.
Feed test the full magazine before you travel. A round nose solid usually feeds beautifully from a controlled round feed action, but confirm it rather than assume it, and check the ammunition after a long flight in a hold.
This is a non expanding dangerous game bullet, so treat every shot as a pass through and be certain of what is behind the animal. The Barnes VOR-TX 416 Rem 400gr Solid will exit almost anything it is pointed at. Store the ammunition cool and dry.
