Description

The Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 GI Spec is a 1911 built to the military pattern rather than the modern sporting one, and in 9mm it becomes something the original never was: cheap to shoot. Carbon steel frame and slide in matte black, a 5 inch stainless barrel, checkered wood grips with the US logo inlaid, and a 9+1 magazine.

GI Spec Means What It Says

The GI Spec designation refers to the pattern: a flat mainspring housing, a small thumb safety, a spur hammer, and the plain, purposeful lines that the 1911A1 wore through two world wars and Korea. There is no extended magazine release, no ambidextrous safety and no front strap checkering, because the original did not have any of that either.

One concession to the modern era is worth flagging: this pistol has a beavertail grip safety rather than the short GI tang. That is a genuine improvement and not a purist compromise — the short tang on an original is what bites the web of the hand under a high grip, and Auto-Ordnance fitting a beavertail means you can shoot the Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 GI Spec for an afternoon without leaving blood on it.

A word on the finish. Matte black over carbon steel is the correct look for a GI-pattern pistol and it is also a working finish rather than a display one: it will wear at the muzzle and the high points of the slide over time, which is exactly what happened to every service 1911 ever issued. If you would rather it did not, a stainless Cerakote version of the same pistol exists and wears differently.

Why it is worth considering

  • GI 1911A1 pattern, with the lines the service pistol actually had
  • Beavertail grip safety fitted, so a high grip does not get bitten
  • 9mm rather than 45, so it costs about half as much to shoot
  • 9+1 capacity and an adjustable rear sight
  • Carbon steel frame and slide, not aluminum or polymer
  • Checkered wood grips with the US logo inlaid

Who it suits

The Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 GI Spec in 9mm suits the shooter who wants a real steel 1911 without the 45 ACP ammunition bill, and anyone buying a first 1911 who wants to learn the platform before deciding what they actually want from it. It is also a sensible choice for a shooter with wrist or hand problems who would like a full-size pistol they can still shoot comfortably. Collectors wanting a period-correct pistol should note the beavertail and the 9mm chambering are both departures from the original.

Ammunition, Magazines and Transfer

The Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 GI Spec in 9mm runs standard 9mm Luger. Practice on 115 or 124 grain full metal jacket; for defensive use a quality jacketed hollow point in 124 or 147 grain. Single-stack 9mm 1911s are occasionally particular about hollow point profiles, so run a box of your chosen load through it before relying on it — that is sound practice with any pistol and more so with a 1911 in 9mm.
