Auto-Ordnance 1911 Texas Ranger 45 ACP — Superb Engraved Tribute Pistol

Description

The Auto-Ordnance 1911 Texas Ranger is a tribute pistol, and it does not pretend to be anything else. Every flat on the slide and frame carries deep scroll engraving, the controls are finished in gold-plated PVD against the bright metal, and the grips are cut with the Texas Ranger star and the date 1823 — the year the Rangers were founded. Underneath the decoration it is a 1911A1 in 45 ACP with a 5 inch barrel and a 7+1 magazine.

The Engraving and the Finish

The scroll work covers the slide from the muzzle to the rear serrations and continues across the frame, the dust cover and the mainspring housing. It is full-coverage rather than panel engraving, which is the distinction between a pistol that has been decorated and one that has been finished as a presentation piece. The bright metal beneath it throws the pattern into relief in a way a matte finish could not.

Against that, the gold-plated PVD accents pick out the controls: the beavertail grip safety, the thumb safety and the hammer, with gold showing at the muzzle and on the slide. The contrast is the point of the design, and it is the detail that makes the Auto-Ordnance 1911 Texas Ranger read as a commemorative from across a room rather than only in the hand.

A note on ownership. A pistol finished this way asks for a little care that a working 1911 does not: wipe the bright metal down after handling, because fingerprints show and will eventually etch, and store it somewhere with stable humidity. None of that is onerous, and none of it is unusual for a presentation firearm. It is mechanically an ordinary 1911 and can be shot, but most owners will not, and that is a perfectly reasonable decision.

Why it is worth considering

• Full-coverage scroll engraving across the slide and frame, not panel work
• Gold-plated PVD accents on the controls against bright metal
• Grips cut with the Texas Ranger star and the founding date of 1823
• Standard 1911A1 pattern in 45 ACP, 7+1
• A commemorative built as a presentation piece rather than a decal job

Who it suits

The Auto-Ordnance 1911 Texas Ranger suits the collector, the Texan, the retired or serving officer, and anyone assembling a case of commemorative 1911s. It also makes a serious retirement or presentation gift where the recipient has a connection to Texas law enforcement. What it does not suit is somebody looking for a 45 to shoot — for that money there are several 1911s that will outshoot this one, and none of them will look like it.

Buying and Transferring the Auto-Ordnance 1911 Texas Ranger

Special edition runs are finite, and Auto-Ordnance does not generally reissue them once a commemorative has sold through. If you are buying this as a gift or to complete a set, that is worth factoring into the timing rather than assuming it will still be available next year. Manufacturer information is published by Auto-Ordnance.

Browse our full Auto-Ordnance range, which also covers their Thompson carbines and standard-pattern 1911s, the wider handgun catalog, or the complete firearms selection. If you want a 45 to shoot rather than to keep, we are happy to point you at something better suited to the job.

All firearm orders ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer, and MAG5 Firearms will coordinate the paperwork with the dealer of your choice.
