Description
The Atomic 7.62×39 220gr Subsonic HPBT is a heavy subsonic load for rifles chambered in 7.62×39. It uses a 220 grain hollow point boat tail bullet at roughly 1,050 fps, keeping the bullet below the speed of sound so a suppressor can work at its quietest. Atomic markets it in its cycling subsonic family, loaded to operate semi-automatic actions. Each box holds 20 rounds.
How the Atomic 7.62×39 220gr Subsonic HPBT Works
Standard 7.62×39 ammunition sends a 120 to 125 grain bullet out at more than 2,300 fps, well above the speed of sound. Even with a suppressor, that bullet produces a supersonic crack downrange. 7.62×39 subsonic ammo solves that by using a much heavier bullet at a lower velocity, so the only noise left is the muffled report of the gas escaping the can and the action cycling.
The challenge with subsonic loads is gas pressure. Many subsonic rounds do not generate enough gas to cycle a semi-auto rifle. Atomic designs its tactical cycling subsonic ammunition to address this, making it a practical choice for suppressed AK ammo and 7.62×39 AR-pattern rifles rather than only bolt guns.
The 220 grain hollow point boat tail bullet is aimed at accuracy and stable flight at low speed. Published retail listings describe a match-style projectile.
Before You Shoot This Load
Test for function first. Cycling depends on your gas system, buffer or spring weight, and whether a suppressor is attached, since a can adds back pressure that often helps. Some rifles will need a suppressor to cycle reliably with any subsonic load. Fire a magazine or two in your exact setup before relying on it.
Barrel twist rate matters with long, heavy bullets at low speed. Many 7.62×39 barrels, especially on AK-pattern rifles, use a twist around 1:9.5, while some bolt guns and AR builds use slower twists. If you see oval holes in paper, the bullet is not stabilizing in your barrel.
Trajectory is steep. A 220 grain bullet near 1,050 fps drops quickly past 100 yards, so zero specifically with this load and learn your holds. Suppressors also require an approved ATF Form 4, a $200 tax stamp where applicable, and compliance with state law, since some states prohibit suppressors.

Why Choose the Atomic 7.62×39 220gr Subsonic HPBT?
Few companies load a cycling subsonic 7.62×39 cartridge, which makes this Atomic load valuable for owners of suppressed AKs, SKS rifles and 7.62×39 AR builds who want quiet shooting without converting to a different caliber.
Subsonic specialty ammunition costs much more per round than steel-cased 7.62×39, and the heavy bullet is designed for accuracy and quiet operation rather than long range. It is not a replacement for standard ammunition for general practice. Many shooters use it for suppressed range sessions, pest control where legal, and training.

Store ammunition in a cool, dry place and keep subsonic rounds clearly separated from supersonic ammunition in your range bag, since mixing them in the same magazine will change point of impact dramatically.
Who it is for: 7.62×39 rifle owners running a suppressor who want quiet, cycling subsonic performance. Follow all federal, state and local laws when purchasing and transporting the Atomic 7.62×39 220gr Subsonic HPBT.
