Description
The Anschutz 1761 D HB 20 inch is the longer-barrelled version of the company’s sporting rimfire, chambered in .17 HMR with a blued heavy barrel and a checkered walnut classic stock. Anschutz builds match rifles for a living, and the 1761 is the hunting action that came out of that work rather than an economy rimfire with a nice name on it.
The Long Heavy Barrel
20-inch heavy barrel in blued steel, two inches longer than the threaded version of the same rifle.
The extra length wrings a little more velocity out of the .17 HMR case and lengthens the sight radius if irons are ever fitted.
Weight forward of the receiver steadies the hold, which is the practical reason the Anschutz 1761 D HB 20 inch suits sitting and prone shooting so well.
Traditional blued finish rather than a modern coating.
Stock, Trigger and Magazine
Checkered walnut in the classic pattern, with a straight comb suited to low scope rings.
Single-stage trigger, which is what the D designation indicates in Anschutz nomenclature.
Five-round detachable magazine, 5+1 total.
No iron sights fitted; the receiver is dovetailed for scope mounts.
Model number A019317.

Choosing between the 18-inch threaded version and this 20-inch barrel comes down to what the rifle is for. Threads matter if a muzzle device is in the plan. If not, the longer barrel is the better rifle: more velocity, more weight where it steadies the hold, and a cleaner line without a protector on the end. Neither is a compromise; they simply serve different owners.
Why it is worth considering
- German-built by a maker known first for match rifles.
- 20-inch heavy barrel for velocity and steadiness.
- Walnut and blued steel throughout.
- Single-stage trigger of Anschutz quality.
- Five-round detachable magazine.
Who it suits
Small-game hunters and rimfire shooters who want a rifle to keep for decades are the natural buyers, and the 20-inch barrel suits anyone shooting from a rest rather than offhand in thick cover. The Anschutz 1761 D HB 20 inch deserves a good scope; a cheap optic will be the limiting factor long before the rifle is.
Choosing Within the 1761 Line
Anschutz builds the 1761 in .22 LR, .22 WMR and .17 HMR, with several barrel lengths and both threaded and plain muzzles. The 18-inch threaded version is the one to pick if a muzzle device matters, and the rest of the Anschutz range covers the .22 LR variants and the target models. Browse the wider firearms catalog to compare against other rimfires. Anschutz publishes model details at Anschutz North America.
.17 HMR pushes a 17-grain bullet past 2,500 feet per second, which gives it a much flatter trajectory than .22 LR and makes range estimation far less critical inside 150 yards. The trade is cost per round and the fact that it cannot be reloaded. Most loads use a polymer-tipped 17-grain bullet, with 20-grain options where a little more penetration is wanted. All firearm orders ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer, and MAG5 Firearms will coordinate the paperwork with the dealer of your choice.
Because no iron sights are fitted, budget for a scope and rings alongside the rifle. A 4-12x or 6-18x with parallax adjustable down to 50 yards makes the most of what this barrel can do, and low rings suit the straight comb of the classic stock.
A word on the walnut: Anschutz uses real timber with cut checkering rather than a moulded pattern, so each stock differs a little in figure. It is worth wiping the wood down after a wet day afield and keeping a light oil finish topped up, which is the only maintenance a stock like this asks for over a lifetime.
