Description
The Anschutz 1761 D HB is a German-built rimfire bolt action in .17 HMR, wearing an 18-inch heavy barrel threaded 1/2×28 and a checkered walnut classic stock over a blued action. Anschutz has spent decades building match rifles, and the 1761 is the sporting action that came out of that experience rather than a budget rimfire dressed up.
Barrel and Action
18-inch heavy barrel with a 1:9 twist, threaded 1/2×28 at the muzzle.
The heavy profile is what makes the Anschutz 1761 D HB hold its point of impact through a long string, and it damps the small vibrations that move a light rimfire barrel around.
Blued finish on barrel and receiver, in the traditional style rather than a modern coating.
The 1761 action is a purpose-built rimfire receiver, not a scaled-down centerfire, so the bolt throw and lock time are short.
Stock, Trigger and Feeding
Checkered walnut stock in the classic pattern, with a straight comb that suits low-mounted scope rings.
Single-stage trigger, which is what the D in the model designation refers to.
Five-round detachable magazine.
No iron sights are fitted; the receiver is dovetailed for scope mounts, so plan on a scope and rings.
Model number A015149.

.17 HMR suits this rifle well. The cartridge drives a 17-grain bullet past 2,500 feet per second, which flattens trajectory enough that a single zero covers most rimfire distances, and it is accurate enough to deserve a barrel of this quality. On a heavy-barrel rifle the extra weight also steadies the hold, which matters more at 150 yards on a small target than it does at rimfire distances people usually think about.
Why it is worth considering
- Built in Germany by a maker known primarily for match rifles.
- Heavy 18-inch barrel, threaded from the factory.
- Walnut and blued steel rather than polymer and coatings.
- Single-stage trigger of the quality Anschutz is known for.
- Compact overall length thanks to the 18-inch barrel.
Who it suits
Serious rimfire shooters and small-game hunters who want one rifle to keep are the natural buyers. The Anschutz 1761 D HB is also a sensible base for a suppressed setup, since the muzzle is already threaded, though MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items, so a suppressor would need to be sourced separately and cleared through ATF approval first. Budget for a quality scope and rings; this rifle will out-shoot a cheap optic.
Scoping and Comparing
Because no iron sights are fitted, a scope is not optional on this rifle. A 4-12x or 6-18x with parallax adjustment down to 50 yards makes the most of what the barrel can do at rimfire distances. Browse the full Anschutz range for the .22 LR and .22 WMR versions of the same action, or the wider firearms catalog to compare. Anschutz publishes model details at Anschutz North America.
.17 HMR is a rimfire cartridge, so it cannot be reloaded and the ammunition choice is narrower than a centerfire. Most loads use a 17-grain polymer-tipped bullet, with 20-grain options available where a little more penetration is wanted on larger pests. Buying a few boxes of two or three brands and testing which groups best is worth the afternoon on a rifle of this quality. All firearm orders ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer, and MAG5 Firearms will coordinate the paperwork with the dealer of your choice.
On the threads: 1/2×28 is the common American pitch, which means thread protectors, brakes and adapters are easy to source. The rifle ships with the muzzle protected, and nothing has to be fitted for it to shoot as intended.
