Description
The AmeriGlo Haven 5 MOA Red Dot is a carry and duty red dot from AmeriGlo, the company best known for its pistol night sights. It gives you a bold 5 MOA dot in a 28 x 19mm window, mounted on the Trijicon RMR footprint that so many optic ready pistols use.
AmeriGlo Haven 5 MOA Red Dot Overview
AmeriGlo catalogs this sight as HVN02 in matte black. The housing is aluminum, and AmeriGlo rates it waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes. The 5 MOA dot covers about 1.25 inches at 25 yards, so it is easy to find quickly while still being precise enough for normal pistol distances.
Side Loading Battery
One CR2032 battery loads from the side of the housing, so you can change it without taking the sight off the slide or losing zero. AmeriGlo rates battery life at up to about three years on low and about one year on the middle and high settings.
Brightness and Auto Off
There are 11 brightness settings, two of them dim enough for night vision use. The Power Protect feature shuts the dot off after about 12 hours without movement and turns it back on when the gun moves, so a gun left in a safe or nightstand does not drain the battery.
Mounting
The Haven uses the RMR footprint. Mount it directly to an RMR cut slide or to an RMR plate for your pistol. On a Glock MOS gun, use the right adapter plate. Pair it with suppressor height or optic compatible iron sights if you want backup irons that co-witness through the window.
Why a Red Dot on a Pistol
With iron sights you have to line up a rear notch, a front post and the target, and your eye can only focus on one of them. With a red dot you keep both eyes open, focus on the target and put the dot on it. Most shooters see faster first shots and better follow up shots once they learn to present the gun so the dot lands in the window.
Care and Use
Keep the lens clean with a soft cloth or lens pen, and check that the mounting screws are tight after the first few range trips. Practice your draw in dry fire until the dot appears right away when the gun comes up.
Zeroing Tips
Most pistol shooters zero a red dot at 15 to 25 yards. Start close to get on paper, then move back and adjust. Fire groups of three to five shots before each change, and confirm zero with the ammunition you plan to carry.
Battery Care
Replace the battery once a year on a defensive gun, even if the dot still looks fine, and keep a spare in your range bag. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth or lens pen, not a shirt tail, to keep the coatings clean. If the dot seems dim or flickers, check the battery and contacts first.
Ordering and Transfer
When you order a firearm from MAG5 Firearms, we ship it to the licensed dealer you choose. Your dealer completes the ATF Form 4473 and the background check, and may charge a transfer fee. Local buyers can complete the transfer at our shop. Bring a valid ID, and check your state waiting period before you plan a hunt or a range trip.
