Description

The Taurus Raging Hunter 357 is the mildest cartridge in a family built for big-bore hunting, and that is exactly what makes it interesting. All the engineering that exists to tame a .500 S&W — the ported barrel, the cushioned grip, the heavy shroud with its integral optics rail — is here on a seven-shot .357 Magnum, where it produces a revolver that is genuinely easy to shoot well.

This Taurus Raging Hunter 357 is the 5.12-inch two-tone build: a matte stainless frame under a black anodized barrel shroud and a matte black oxide cylinder, with a red-insert rubber grip.

What the Taurus Raging Hunter 357 gives you

  • The Taurus Raging Hunter 357 holds seven rounds, one more than almost every other revolver in this class
  • 5.12-inch barrel with a dual-stage gas expansion port system cut into the top of the shroud
  • Full-length Picatinny rail machined into the shroud, so a red dot or a pistol scope mounts with no adapter
  • Matte stainless frame with a black anodized shroud and matte black oxide cylinder
  • Cushioned rubber grip with the red insert down the backstrap, the Raging family signature
  • Adjustable rear sight and an exposed hammer for deliberate single-action shots
  • .38 Special drops straight in, which makes an afternoon of practice affordable

Why the big-bore engineering matters on a .357

  • Weight. This is a large-frame revolver carrying a .357 cartridge, so recoil is genuinely mild for the calibre
  • Porting on a .357 is close to free. There is not much muzzle rise to bleed off, so what the ports remove is most of what is left
  • The grip insert was designed for .500 S&W. On a Taurus Raging Hunter 357 it makes full-power loads feel like .38 Special
  • Seven shots and a factory optics rail make this a credible silhouette and steel-plate gun as well as a hunting one
  • With a 158 or 180 grain load and an optic, a 5.12-inch .357 will cleanly take deer and hogs inside about seventy-five yards
  • The trade is size. Nobody is carrying this concealed, and it is heavy on a belt all day

.357 Magnum and .38 Special are both standardised cartridges with published pressures and dimensions maintained by SAAMI. The magnum case is a tenth of an inch longer than the .38, which is why the shorter round chambers in this cylinder and the longer one will not fit a .38-only revolver.

One honest point about the ports. They are still ports, and on a big-frame .357 the extra noise and side blast buy you less than they do on a .500. If you shoot mostly indoors or beside other people, that is worth weighing. If you shoot outdoors and want the flattest possible recovery between shots, the Taurus Raging Hunter 357 is about as settled as a magnum revolver gets.

Why this revolver earns its place

  • Seven rounds of .357 Magnum, with a factory optics rail included
  • Big-bore recoil engineering applied to a mid-bore cartridge, which is why the Taurus Raging Hunter 357 shoots so flat
  • Adjustable sights and a long sight radius, which is what actually produces groups
  • .38 Special practice at a fraction of the cost of feeding a .460 or .500
  • Stainless frame and black oxide cylinder, which handle wet weather better than blued steel
  • A legitimate hunting handgun in a cartridge most people already own ammunition for

Handgun hunters who do not want a shoulder-breaking cartridge, silhouette and steel shooters, and anyone who has wanted a Raging Hunter but flinched at the ammunition cost of the big bores. The Taurus Raging Hunter 357 is the most practical gun in the family and probably the most shot.

If you prefer an all-black finish, the black .357 Raging Hunter is the same gun in a single colour. Stepping up in calibre, the .44 Magnum two-tone and the .460 S&W at the same barrel length are the next two rungs.

If you want .357 without the size, the eight-shot Taurus 608 and the seven-shot Tracker 627 are lighter answers in the same cartridge.

Every Taurus Raging Hunter 357 ships with the factory case, the manual and a lock. Transfers go to your FFL and we handle our end of the paperwork the same day.
