Description

The Beretta M9A1 in 9mm, part number JS92M9A1, is the ten round configuration of the service pistol the Marine Corps asked for. The frame carries a Picatinny rail and a beavertail, the front strap and backstrap are aggressively checkered, and the magazine well is bevelled. The barrel is 4.90 inches, the slide is black Cerakoted steel, and the aluminium frame is black. Grips are black textured panels. Underneath it is the same open slide, falling locking block 92 that served as the United States military sidearm for three decades.

The M9A1 is that gun with the changes service use actually asked for, in the capacity that states with magazine limits will allow.

What the A1 changes, and why

The dust cover rail is the headline. A 92 without one takes a light only by way of a clamp; this takes a light or a laser directly, which is the difference between a nightstand gun and a range gun.

The beavertail ends the hammer bite a high grip could earn on the original frame. It is a small change that removes an entire category of complaint.

Checkering on the front strap and backstrap is deeper than on a standard 92, which is what keeps the gun in place in wet hands.

The bevelled magazine well sounds like a detail until you fumble a reload. Then it is the whole point.

Why the Beretta M9A1 still shoots the way it does

The top of the slide is cut away entirely rather than having a conventional ejection port, so a spent case has nowhere to catch and a fresh round has a clear path into the chamber.

The locking block falls rather than the barrel tilting, so the barrel stays level through the cycle. That is a large part of why the 92 shoots as flat as it does.

A 4.90 inch barrel and the long sight radius that comes with it flatter most shooters, and the weight settles the muzzle between shots.

Ambidextrous safety and decocker and a reversible magazine release, so left handed shooters are not an afterthought.

Cartridge dimensions and pressures are standardized by SAAMI. For practice we stock 115 grain 9mm brass cased full metal jacket, which is the load most 92s are happiest on. Ten round and full capacity 92 magazines share the same body, so anything you buy for this gun will still fit if your circumstances change. If you intend to hang a light on the rail, fit it before you buy a holster, because a railed 92 with a light on it does not fit a standard 92 holster.

The fifteen round version is the M9A1 15 round, the guns without a rail are the 92FS and the 92FS Inox 10 round, and the modern build is the 92GTS. Check your own state and local rules before ordering, since capacity limits vary and we cannot advise on them. Every handgun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer.

Why it is worth considering

  • A Picatinny rail, so a light mounts without a barrel clamp.
  • A beavertail frame, which ends the hammer bite a high grip could earn.
  • Deeper checkering front and back, which holds in wet hands.
  • A bevelled magazine well, which shows up the first time you fumble a reload.
  • Ten plus one, which keeps the gun workable where capacity is capped.

Who it suits

This suits a shooter who wants the 92 as a duty or home defence pistol rather than as a range gun, will actually use the rail, and either needs ten rounds or does not mind them. If you have no intention of mounting a light, the standard 92FS costs less and handles the same. Every handgun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer.
