Description

The Taurus GX4 Carry is the long-grip member of the GX4 family and the one that closes the gap between a micro-compact and a compact. Taurus catalogues it as 1-GX4CRP941: 15+1 rounds of 9mm Luger, a 3.70-inch steel barrel finished in satin black DLC, and a black gas-nitride slide cut at the factory for a micro red dot.

The extra capacity comes from the grip, not the slide. Taurus lengthened the frame just enough to take a 15-round magazine while keeping the same slide width and the same short sight radius, so the Taurus GX4 Carry conceals almost as well as the micro and carries half again as many rounds.

MAG5 Firearms has it in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer with your dealer.

Where the fifteen rounds come from

  • A longer grip frame, so all three fingers land on the gun instead of the little finger curling under the magazine.
  • The same slide and the same width as the micro-compact GX4, which is what actually determines printing under a shirt.
  • Fifteen rounds plus one chambered, which is compact-pistol capacity in a carry-pistol footprint.
  • Interchangeable backstraps, so the longer grip can still be sized to the hand.
  • A 3.70-inch barrel, slightly longer than the micro, which recovers a little velocity and a little sight radius.

Optic cut, finishes and controls

  • The optic cut is milled at the factory and ships with a cover plate fitted, so there is no gunsmith bill and no downtime.
  • Satin black DLC on the barrel is a hard, low-friction surface that helps the Taurus GX4 Carry run clean between cleanings.
  • Gas nitride on the slide is a surface treatment rather than a coating, so it does not chip or flake at the holster contact points.
  • Front and rear slide serrations deep enough to work with cold or gloved hands.
  • A Picatinny rail segment under the dust cover for a compact weapon light.

Ammunition is uncomplicated. All 9mm Luger from a reputable maker is produced to the chamber and pressure standard published by SAAMI, so practice ball and defensive hollow points both headspace and cycle correctly. A shorter barrel costs some velocity, so a defensive load designed to expand at carry-gun speeds earns its price. We stock CCI Blazer Brass 9mm for practice. For carry, stay with standard pressure or +P loads from a maker you know; the +P+ ammunition on the market is above the published SAAMI ceiling and is not something we would run through a 21 ounce micro compact as a routine diet.

The shorter-gripped GX4 micro-compact holds 11+1 and hides a little better. The same Carry frame comes fitted into a folding-brace chassis as the GX4 Strike Industries package. Compare the rest of our semi-automatic handguns before deciding.

Mounting an optic on the Taurus GX4 Carry

Taurus publishes the footprint rather than leaving you to measure it. The T.O.R.O. cut on the Taurus GX4 Carry takes the Holosun K series pattern and the optics that share it, which is the most common micro red dot footprint on the market. Cutting a carry gun for the common pattern instead of a proprietary one is the whole point of the exercise.

The Holosun HS507K X2 drops straight onto that cut with no adapter plate in the stack, which matters more on a carry pistol than on a range gun. Every plate between an optic and a slide is another set of screws to check after every few hundred rounds.

The cover plate is installed from the factory, so the Taurus GX4 Carry works as an iron sighted pistol out of the box and converts when you are ready for it. The rear sight is drift adjustable and the front is fixed, which is the usual arrangement on a carry gun and is easy to zero.

Carrying the Taurus GX4 Carry day to day

At 1.08 inches wide and 21.51 ounces empty, the Taurus GX4 Carry is a genuine inside the waistband pistol rather than a compact that claims to be one. Width is what prints, and this one is narrower than most double stack compacts. The 6.56 inch overall length disappears under a shirt; the 5.16 inch height is the dimension that shows if you sit down carelessly.

Holster fit is straightforward, because the Taurus GX4 Carry shares its slide and belt line profile with the rest of the GX4 family and holsters for the line are widely made. The Picatinny rail takes a compact weapon light without changing how the grip fills the hand.

If this is more pistol than you want to carry, the Taurus GX2 holds 13+1 behind a 3.37 inch barrel at a lower price, and we hold close to two hundred of those as well. If you want the same Taurus GX4 Carry frame in a braced chassis, that option is linked above.

Why the GX4 Carry earns its place

  • The Taurus GX4 Carry gives up almost nothing in concealment to the micro-compact and gains four rounds.
  • A factory optic cut at a price where most makers still treat the milling as an upgrade.
  • DLC and gas nitride are finishes usually reserved for pistols costing considerably more.
  • Magazines, holsters and light mounts for the GX4 line are widely stocked.
  • Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the original buyer.

This is the GX4 for someone who found the micro a little small in the hand. The Taurus GX4 Carry is easier to shoot well, easier to reload under pressure and no harder to hide under a shirt, which for most people makes it the better daily choice. It also works as a first carry pistol, since the optic cut means a red dot can be added once the fundamentals are in place.
