Description
The Mossberg 500 JIC Cruiser 12 Ga 18.5 is a compact pistol grip pump shotgun that comes packed in a water-resistant carry tube. JIC stands for Just In Case, and this 12 gauge with an 18.5 inch cylinder bore barrel is built to ride along in a boat, truck, camper or cabin so you always have a reliable shotgun close at hand.
Mossberg 500 JIC Cruiser 12 Ga 18.5 Overview
The Mossberg 500 is one of the most widely used pump shotguns in the world, trusted by hunters, homeowners and law enforcement for decades. The JIC Cruiser takes that proven action and packages it for portability. 5 pounds. 5 inch matte blue barrel has a cylinder bore and a simple bead sight for fast, close-range shooting, and the 3 inch chamber handles both 2-3/4 and 3 inch shells. Capacity is 5+1. Mossberg’s top tang safety is ambidextrous and easy to reach, and dual extractors and twin action bars give smooth, reliable cycling.
The included carry tube has a shoulder strap and helps protect the shotgun from water and dirt during storage and travel.
Built for Just In Case
The JIC concept is simple. Keep a dependable, easy-to-use shotgun packed and ready where you might need it most. The tube keeps the gun clean and dry and makes it easy to store in a boat compartment, behind a truck seat or in a camper closet. The rugged 500 action will work when called on, even after long periods of storage.
Pistol Grip Handling
A pistol grip shotgun is compact and maneuverable, but it takes practice to shoot well. Hold the gun firmly, pull it back into a solid stance and practice at close range with light loads before moving to buckshot or slugs. Many shooters fire from a hip or retention position at very close range, and regular practice builds confidence.
Loads for Defense and the Outdoors
Buckshot is a popular choice for defense at close range, while slugs extend useful range for larger animals. Birdshot works well for snakes and pests. The cylinder bore barrel shoots all of these, and the 3 inch chamber gives you the full range of 12 gauge options.
Choosing Shells
Pattern your shotgun with several loads at the distances you expect to shoot, since every barrel and choke combination behaves differently. Use the right shot size for your game or target and follow local rules on nontoxic shot where required.
Fit and Mounting
A shotgun that fits lets you look straight down the rib with your cheek firmly on the stock. Practice smooth gun mounts at home with an unloaded gun to build consistency in the field and on the clay range.
Care and Maintenance
Clean the bore, chokes and action after each outing, especially after rain or salt water. A light coat of oil on metal parts and a clean action keep the shotgun running reliably for years.
Choke Selection
Tighter chokes such as modified and full extend effective range for waterfowl and turkey, while improved cylinder and skeet chokes open patterns for close birds and clay targets. Always use chokes rated for the shot you are shooting, especially steel.
Recommended Accessories
Eye and ear protection, a cleaning kit, extra choke tubes and a padded case are smart additions. Hunters may want a sling, while clay shooters often add a shell pouch and recoil reducing pad.
