Description
The Grand Power Araq-S 762×39 Pistol blends an AR-style upper and lower with the AK cartridge and AK magazines. This SB version has an 11-inch threaded barrel, an SB Tactical SBA5 brace, a free-float M-LOK handguard and a black finish. It is made in Slovakia by Grand Power and imported by Global Ordnance.

Grand Power Araq-S 762×39 Pistol Overview
Grand Power designed the Araq family to give AR15 shooters the ergonomics they know, a pistol grip, forward assist, case deflector and a Picatinny top rail, while feeding the 7.62×39 round from the magazines AK owners already have. The Araq-S runs on a short-stroke piston instead of direct impingement, so far less carbon is blown back into the receiver. The handguard floats free of the barrel and can be removed without tools. Grand Power lists the Araq-S at about 3,425 grams, roughly 7.5 pounds, without a magazine, and optional ambidextrous controls are available.
A Piston AR That Feeds From AK Magazines
The headline feature is the magazine well. Rather than requiring special 7.62×39 AR magazines, which have a reputation for feeding problems, the Araq accepts AKM pattern steel and polymer magazines with a rock-in style fit. That means a 20-round or 30-round magazine you already own should work, and replacements are inexpensive and easy to find. Expect some aftermarket or surplus magazines to fit tighter or looser than others, so test each one with live ammunition before you count on it.

Barrel, Gas System and Handguard
The 11-inch barrel is threaded for a muzzle device, and the gas piston pushes an operating rod rather than venting gas into the bolt carrier. That keeps the bolt and trigger group cleaner and lets the gun run cooler with a suppressor, though the piston parts still need cleaning. The free-float M-LOK handguard carries lights, lasers and a handstop. There are no factory sights, so plan on a red dot or a set of folding iron sights on the top rail.
SB Tactical SBA5 Brace
This pistol ships with a black polymer SB Tactical SBA5 brace, the five-position adjustable design that slides on a carbine-style buffer tube. It gives a steadier hold than a bare tube and folds the overall length into something that fits in a truck or a backpack case. Brace regulation has changed several times in recent years: the ATF rule that reclassified many braced pistols was vacated by federal courts in 2024, but state law and future federal action can differ, so stay current.
Shooting the 7.62×39 in a Short Barrel
The 7.62×39 cartridge loses some velocity from an 11-inch barrel compared with a 16-inch rifle, yet it still hits much harder than 5.56 inside 150 yards, which makes the Araq-S a strong truck, ranch or hog gun. Muzzle blast and flash are significant from the short barrel, so wear hearing protection and expect a fireball at night. Steel-case range ammunition is still widely available at lower cost than most rifle calibers, while quality hunting loads cost more.
Honest Caveats
The Araq is a niche design from a smaller importer, so holsters, slings and spare parts are less common than for a standard AR15, and resale value is less predictable. The distributor listings disagree on the magazine count and capacity in the box, with some showing one 20-round magazine and others a 30-round magazine, so confirm what ships with your gun. Suppressors are NFA items that require an approved ATF Form 4 and state legality. Adding a vertical foregrip to a pistol can create an NFA item.
Safe Storage
Store handguns unloaded in a locked safe, lockbox or with a cable lock, and keep ammunition separate when children are in the home. Quick access safes let you keep a defensive handgun secure but available. Teach everyone in the household basic firearm safety rules.
Ordering From MAG5
Choose your local FFL dealer at checkout and we ship directly to them. Once the firearm arrives, your dealer will run the background check and complete the transfer paperwork. Most dealers charge a modest transfer fee, so ask about it before you order.
State Laws and Ownership
Semi-automatic pistols that accept detachable magazines outside the grip, with threaded barrels or braces, are banned or tightly restricted in California, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Illinois, Washington, Colorado and Delaware, and many of those states also limit magazine capacity. Pennsylvania has no assault weapon ban, but handgun transfers go through a licensed dealer with a background check. Local rules change often, so check before ordering.
