Description
The Judge Home Defender takes the five-shot .45 Colt and .410 cylinder and puts it behind a 13-inch rifled barrel with a walnut forend and a Picatinny rail along the top of the frame. It is held with two hands like a carbine and it is still, legally and mechanically, a handgun.
The Judge Home Defender has a walnut grip and forend, matte black oxide barrel, cylinder and alloy steel frame, and a 3-inch chamber so both shell lengths are usable.
What the Judge Home Defender is
- The Judge Home Defender has a 13-inch rifled barrel, which turns a close-range revolver into something you can aim properly with both hands
- Walnut forend with slots for a light or a sling mount, and a matching walnut grip
- Picatinny rail along the top of the frame for a red dot or a light
- Five chambers taking .45 Colt cartridges or .410 shotshells, in any mix you load
- 3-inch chamber, so both 2-1/2 inch and 3-inch .410 shells are usable in this model
- Matte black oxide barrel, cylinder and alloy steel frame
- Transfer bar safety and an exposed hammer

The legal position, plainly stated
- The barrel is rifled, and the firearm has no shoulder stock. That is what makes it a handgun rather than a short-barrelled shotgun
- Do not fit a stock to it. Adding a shoulder stock to a 13-inch barrelled firearm creates an NFA item, which requires an ATF application and an approved tax stamp before you may possess it
- MAG5 does not sell NFA items and we do not configure short-barrelled rifles or shotguns
- Because it is a handgun, the Judge Home Defender transfers like any other handgun. Your own state rules still apply and we are happy to talk them through
- The rifling is also why a shot charge spins outward and the pattern opens faster than it would from a smoothbore
- Ask us if anything above is unclear for your situation rather than working it out from a forum post

.45 Colt dates to 1873 and .410 bore is older than most shotgun gauges still in use. Both are standardised, with dimensions and pressures published by SAAMI, and the shared case diameter is what lets one cylinder take a revolver cartridge and a shotshell.
One thing the long barrel genuinely changes. A .410 load out of thirteen inches has time to settle, so patterns are tighter and .45 Colt velocity is considerably higher than out of a three-inch Judge. This is still a close-range firearm and the rifling still opens shot patterns faster than a smoothbore, but the Judge Home Defender is the most capable version of the idea Taurus builds. Stick to standard-pressure .45 Colt: heavy “Ruger only” loads have no place in it.
Why this firearm earns its place
- Two entirely different ammunition types from one cylinder, aimed with both hands
- A 13-inch barrel that gets far more from both cartridges than a short Judge does
- The Judge Home Defender takes a red dot and a light straight from the rail and the forend
- Walnut furniture, which looks and feels considerably better than polymer
- A 3-inch chamber, so 3-inch .410 shells are on the menu
- Revolver simplicity: nothing to rack, nothing to jam, nothing to forget under pressure
Home and property defenders who want something steadier than a handgun but do not want a long gun, rural owners dealing with snakes and vermin, and anyone who wants the Judge concept in its most effective form. The Judge Home Defender is a specialist and it is very good at what it does.
For something you can actually carry, the Judge with the Viridian laser grip and the Judge Compact are the handgun-sized versions.
For a factory optic cut on a carry-sized Judge, the Judge TORO is the answer. And in pocket size, the Public Defender and the FDE Public Defender carry the same cylinder in a much smaller frame.
Every Judge Home Defender ships with the factory case, the manual and a lock. Transfers go to your FFL and our end of the paperwork is done the same day.
