Description
The Holosun ARO Red Multi-Reticle Sight is an affordable 22mm red dot for AR-15s, carbines and shotguns, with Holosun’s red Multi-Reticle System, motion activation and a quick-detach riser. It replaces the familiar 403 and 503 series with a slightly larger window and updated controls.
Holosun ARO Red Multi-Reticle Sight Overview
Distributors catalog this optic as ARO-MRS-RD, and Holosun currently lists the same 3.38 ounce, 2.48 by 1.54 by 2.63 inch sight under its ARO Core line. The window is 0.866 inches across, which gives a bit more room than older 20mm micro dots. The housing is aluminum in matte black. Windage and elevation adjust 0.5 MOA per click with plus or minus 50 MOA of travel, enough to zero almost any rifle without shims.
Red Reticle Advantages
Red remains the most common choice because it is what most shooters learned on, it contrasts against green and brown backgrounds, and it is efficient on battery power. At moderate settings the red dot is sharp and easy to see indoors and in shade. If you have astigmatism and the dot looks like a starburst, the gold version of the ARO is worth comparing.
Three Reticles, One Button
The MRS lets you run a 2 MOA dot by itself, a 65 MOA circle by itself, or the circle with the dot in the middle. For a home-defense carbine or a shotgun, the circle-dot is fast and intuitive. For zeroing and shooting small groups at 100 yards, use the plain dot. Holosun lists 10 daylight brightness settings and 2 night vision compatible settings.
Power Management
Battery life is rated at 50,000 hours at setting 6. The coin cell sits in a side tray, so changing it does not mean removing the optic. Shake Awake turns the LED off after a period of stillness and back on when the rifle moves, and lockout mode keeps the buttons from being pressed accidentally. This model has no solar panel.
Mounting
A quick-detach riser places the dot about 1.63 inches above the rail, a lower 1/3 co-witness with standard AR-15 iron sights. That keeps the irons in the bottom of the window as a backup. Holosun’s current ARO Core retail package also lists a low 1.05 inch mount for shotguns and rimfires, but contents vary by production run, so confirm what is in your box.
Honest Take
The ARO is an open-tube dot with an aluminum body, not an enclosed or titanium sight, and it is not built for duty abuse at the level of the AEMS or 530 series. For a range rifle, a home-defense carbine or a first AR, it delivers a quality reticle and a long battery life at a fair price. The gallery uses distributor images of this exact red model.
