Taurus Judge Black 45 Colt/410 3in 5rd — Superb Modern Revolver

Description

The Taurus Judge Black is the current-generation Judge in an all-black finish, catalogued as 2-JUDGE31. Five rounds of 45 Colt or 410, a 3-inch barrel inside a squared shroud with a full-length top rib, and black stainless steel across the barrel, frame and cylinder.

This is not the revolver that made the Judge famous. Taurus redesigned it: the slim tapered barrel and separate front blade are gone, replaced by a sleeved barrel with the rib and the fiber optic built in. The result is a longer, flatter sighting plane and a little more weight out front, both of which make the Taurus Judge Black easier to shoot well than any of the older patterns.

MAG5 Firearms has it in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer with your dealer.

What the redesign changed

• A full-length top rib instead of a barrel-mounted blade, which gives a longer and cleaner sight picture.
• A squared shroud that adds forward weight, settling the muzzle under a 45 Colt load.
• An all-black finish with no bright metal anywhere, which suits a gun kept for low light.
• The Taurus Judge Black keeps the five-chamber cylinder bored straight through for both a cartridge and a shotshell.
• A grip reshaped to fill the hand higher on the backstrap, which matters on a revolver of this weight.

Build, sights and safety

• Black stainless steel barrel, frame and cylinder, so the corrosion resistance is in the metal rather than in a coating.
• Fiber optic front sight set into the rib, bright enough to pick up indoors and in shade.
• Black rubber grip that spreads recoil across the palm rather than concentrating it at the web of the hand.
• Transfer bar safety blocks the firing pin mechanically until the trigger is fully pressed.
• The Taurus Judge Black runs double action, with the trigger doing the whole job in one press.

One practical point before buying shells: Judge cylinders come cut for either 2-1/2 inch or 3-inch 410, and the length is stamped on the barrel. Check yours, and never load a 3-inch shell in a 2-1/2 inch chamber. Both 45 Colt and 410 are produced to the dimensional and pressure standards published by SAAMI, so factory ammunition from any reputable maker is appropriate. We stock Remington Performance WheelGun 45 Colt and HSM Cowboy Action 45 Colt.

The same redesigned gun in two-tone is the Judge Two Tone. Among the classic-pattern guns, the Judge Compact costs less and the Judge Magnum Black takes 3-inch shells. Browse our other revolvers too.

Why this Judge earns its place

• The Taurus Judge Black is the version Taurus builds today, with a better sighting plane than any of the older patterns.
• Black stainless rather than a coated carbon steel, so the finish is not something that can wear through.
• Five rounds of 45 Colt or 410 from the same cylinder, with no conversion parts of any kind.
• Forward weight makes it more pleasant to shoot than the size and chambering suggest.
• Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the original buyer.

This suits a buyer who wants a Judge and would rather have the current design than the one that has been on shelves for fifteen years. The Taurus Judge Black works as a nightstand revolver, a truck gun or a property gun, and the longer sighting rib makes it noticeably easier to place a 45 Colt round than the slim-barrel models ever were.
