Description

The Beretta 686 Sporting in 12 gauge, part number J686S1230, is the fixed stock version of Beretta’s clays 686 and the sensible starting point in the line. Barrels are 30 inches, blued with a vent rib, chambers are 3 inches, and the receiver is steel with silver engraving. Two things mark it out from the field guns.

The top rib is the wider 10 by 6 millimetre tapered sporting profile rather than the 6 by 6 field rib, and the barrels are joined by a vented middle rib, which sheds heat over a long round instead of letting mirage rise off hot tubes and blur the sight picture. The stock is Grade 2 walnut with a 14.38 inch length of pull and an Extralight pad, the trigger is the single selective inertia unit, and five flush Optima-Choke HP tubes ship in the case.

Fixed comb, and when that is the right answer

An adjustable comb is worth real money to a shooter who knows their dimensions and wants to dial them in. It is worth nothing to a shooter who does not, and it is one more thing to work loose.

A 14.38 inch pull with the standard 686 comb fits a large share of adult shooters straight out of the box. If it fits you, the fixed stock is stiffer, lighter and cheaper.

Fit can still be corrected later. A gunsmith can add a pad, bend the stock, or fit an adjustable comb if your dimensions turn out to be unusual.

If you already know you need comb height adjustment, buy the B-Fast build and skip the intermediate step.

What the Beretta 686 Sporting brings to the station

The 10 by 6 tapered rib gives a wider, flatter sighting plane than the field rib, which makes the picture easier to repeat across fifty targets.

The vented middle rib is not decoration. Barrels get hot over a round, and rising heat distorts the view down the rib if there is nowhere for it to go.

Thirty inch barrels carry their weight forward, which keeps the swing moving through a crosser rather than stopping on it.

The low profile boxlock, conical locking lugs and replaceable shoulders are what keep 680 series actions tight through decades of heavy round counts.

Shotshell dimensions and pressures are standardized by SAAMI, and the 3 inch chambers accept 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells, though clays shooting is 2 3/4 inch work. Standard 1 1/8 ounce target loads are the practice shell, and Browning BXD Upland in 5 shot covers the days you take it hunting. Do not dry fire the gun without snap caps, and let the barrels cool between rounds if you are shooting a lot in warm weather.

Shooters who want comb adjustment should compare the B-Fast builds in 20 gauge and 28 gauge, left handed shooters should look at the left hand 12 gauge, and the field guns are here in 28 inch and 30 inch.

Why it is worth considering

  • A 10 by 6 tapered sporting rib, wider and flatter than the field rib.
  • A vented middle rib, so heat mirage does not blur the sight picture late in a round.
  • Thirty inch barrels, which keep a swing moving through the target.
  • Five flush chokes in the case, so the gun covers more than one presentation out of the box.
  • The 680 series boxlock, an action that stays tight through heavy round counts.

Who it suits

This suits a shooter moving into sporting clays or skeet who fits a standard stock and would rather put the money into barrels and rounds than into hardware. Anyone who already knows they need comb height adjustment should buy a B-Fast build, and an upland hunter will be happier with one of the lighter field guns. Every long gun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer.
