Description
The Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357 Magnum is the mildest and arguably most useful chambering in Smith & Wesson’s modern lever line. Out of a 19.25-inch stainless barrel, 357 Magnum gains serious velocity over a revolver, recoil is genuinely light, and the rifle will also feed 38 Special — which makes practice cheap in a way no other centerfire lever gun manages.

357 and 38 Special From the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357
This is the quiet advantage of the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357. Load 357 Magnum for hunting or defense and the rifle barrel pushes it to velocities a revolver never sees. Load 38 Special and you have a soft-recoiling, inexpensive plinker that the same gun will cycle. No other centerfire lever cartridge gives you that range of use.
For a family rifle that has to work for a new shooter and an experienced one, that flexibility is hard to beat.
What the Large Loop Adds
An oversized lever loop clears a gloved hand, which stops being a novelty the first time you hunt in the cold. It also gives a more consistent index point for the cycling stroke. On the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357 it pairs with the synthetic stock and stainless metal to make a rifle clearly built for field use rather than display.
Nothing about it changes how the action works — it is the same lockup as the standard loop.
Between the loop, the stock and the stainless metal, the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357 is a working rifle rather than a collectible.
Stainless, M-LOK and Threads on the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357
Stainless barrel and receiver resist corrosion better than blued steel, and a synthetic stock will not swell or warp in wet weather. The M-LOK forend takes a light or a sling mount without drilling anything, which on a traditional lever gun usually means a gunsmith.
The muzzle is threaded. A brake fits directly; a suppressor requires the federal NFA process, and we do not sell NFA items, so that has to come from a dealer holding an SOT.

Who the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357 Is For
Anyone who already owns a 357 revolver and wants a rifle that shares ammunition. New shooters, because 38 Special through a rifle this weight recoils barely at all. And woods hunters who want something light and quick handling for deer and hogs inside a hundred yards.
It is also the lever gun we point people toward when they want one rifle that a whole household can shoot comfortably.
Cost of practice is the argument that usually closes it: feeding the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357 38 Special is cheaper than almost any other centerfire rifle.
Ammunition and Feeding
Tube magazine means flat-point or polymer-tipped bullets only — no pointed spitzers. For hunting, 158 to 180 grain 357 loads do the work. For practice, 38 Special is inexpensive and mild. Confirm that whatever you buy cycles reliably in the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357 before you depend on it.
Some very short 38 loads can be finicky in lever guns, so test before you stock up.
Buy a box of each and run them through the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357 before hunting season rather than during it.
Optics and Setup
A receiver rail accepts a red dot or a compact scope. At the ranges this rifle is used, a dot keeps it light and fast, and irons remain usable underneath. A padded sling is worth adding.
If you shoot both 357 and 38 through the Smith Wesson 1854 Large Loop 357, confirm zero separately — point of impact shifts noticeably between the two.
