Description

The Rock River Arms LAR-22 MID A4 is a dedicated 22 LR rifle built on a true AR-15 chassis, with an extruded aluminum A4 upper and a forged RRA LAR-15M lower. It weighs 5.4 pounds and shoots rimfire ammunition through a 16-inch chrome moly barrel. Rock River Arms LAR-22 MID A4 22 LR rifle with 16 inch barrel and six position stock

A Real AR, Not a Conversion Kit

There are two ways to shoot 22 LR through an AR-15. One is a drop-in conversion bolt in a centerfire rifle, which works but fouls the chamber and never runs quite right. The other is a purpose-built rimfire. The Rock River Arms LAR-22 MID A4 is the second kind. It is built from the ground up around the cartridge, so the bolt, the chamber and the magazine are all designed for rimfire rather than adapted to it.

Aluminum Receivers

This version uses an extruded aluminum A4 upper with a port door and no forward assist, mated to a forged aluminum RRA LAR-15M lower marked multi-caliber. Polymer versions of this rifle exist and cost less, but aluminum gives the rigidity and the feel of a centerfire AR. That matters if the point of owning it is cheap practice that transfers to your 5.56 rifle.

16-Inch Chrome Moly Barrel

The barrel is chrome moly steel with a 1:16 twist, the correct rate for standard 40-grain 22 LR bullets. Sixteen inches lets the powder burn completely and keeps velocity consistent shot to shot. The muzzle carries an A2 flash hider on 1/2×28 threads, so a suppressor or a different muzzle device installs without any adapter. A suppressed 22 rifle is about as quiet as shooting gets.

Mid-Length Handguard

The handguard is a mid-length round unit with aluminum heat shields, the classic AR arrangement. It is light, it is comfortable and it puts the support hand where most shooters naturally want it. Combined with the six-position RRA Tactical CAR stock, the LAR-22 adjusts to fit shooters of very different sizes, which makes it an excellent rifle for teaching.

RRA Single Stage Trigger

Rock River fits its own single stage trigger rather than a generic mil-spec unit. It breaks cleanly, which matters far more on a rimfire where you are shooting small targets at modest distances. Sights are not fitted, so the flat top upper is free for whatever optic you prefer.

What It Costs to Shoot

A brick of 22 LR costs less than a box of 5.56, and the Rock River Arms LAR-22 MID A4 handles like the centerfire rifle you already own. Every drill you practise here, from reloads to malfunction clearance, transfers directly. At 5.4 pounds and 36 inches extended, it is also light enough for younger or smaller shooters to handle unaided.

Who Should Buy It

This is a training rifle, a plinker and a small game gun in one. Anyone who owns an AR-15 and wants to shoot ten times as much for the same money should own one, and it is an excellent first rifle for a new or younger shooter.

The Rock River Arms LAR-22 MID A4 is a rimfire, so it is ammunition sensitive and will prefer some brands over others. It also costs more than a basic 22 rifle, because you are paying for the AR ergonomics rather than the ballistics.

Shooters who only want a cheap 22 should compare a traditional rimfire rifle, and anyone needing centerfire performance should look at a 5.56 carbine in our catalog. Every firearm we list ships to your chosen FFL and is transferred in accordance with federal and state law.
