Why 165 Grains Is the One Box Answer

The 30-06 spans a wide range of bullet weights and each end gives something up. A 150 grain bullet shoots flatter and is plenty for deer but gets thin on elk. A 180 or 200 grain bullet penetrates beautifully on big animals and arcs noticeably at distance. The 165 sits in between and gives up very little at either end, which is why Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr Soft Point is the sensible default for a hunter who does not want to think about it.

Sectional density is the reason Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr Soft Point works so broadly, not marketing. A 165 grain 30 calibre bullet carries enough weight relative to its diameter to drive deep on a heavy animal while still leaving fast enough to shoot flat inside 300 yards. It is a genuine deer and elk load rather than a deer load stretched to cover elk.

The projectile in Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr Soft Point is a Hornady InterLock, a conventional cup and core soft point with a mechanical ring inside the jacket that holds the core during expansion. Nothing exotic, published terminal behaviour, decades of use behind it.

Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr Soft Point Specifications

The 2,790 fps figure for Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr Soft Point is printed on the box by Ammo Inc and is right where a 165 grain 30-06 belongs. It is a test barrel number, so a 22 inch hunting rifle will read slightly under it.

Compared against the lighter option, you are trading about 170 feet per second for 15 grains of bullet. In practice that means roughly two more inches of drop at 300 yards and meaningfully better performance if the shot is into heavy shoulder. Our 150 grain Hunt SP is the flatter choice if deer are the only quarry.

The Garand warning applies to this load as it does to all modern commercial 30-06. Do not use it in an M1. The rifle was designed around the pressure curve of the original service cartridge, and slow burning powders keep port pressure high enough to bend or break an operating rod. This is bolt action and modern semi-auto ammunition.

Making One Load Cover a Season

Sight in once with Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr Soft Point and leave it alone. The practical advantage of settling on a single weight is that your zero stops moving. Hunters who keep three different loads in the cabinet and grab whichever box is nearest are the ones who find out at the worst moment that the rifle is three inches off. Pick one, confirm it, buy enough of that lot.

Know your real maximum range. A 165 grain bullet at 2,790 fps has plenty of energy well past 300 yards, but energy is not the limit. Your ability to hold from a field position on a windy morning is. Shoot from sticks, kneeling and prone at the distances you actually hunt, and set your limit from that rather than from a ballistic chart.

Do the volume work dry. The 30-06 kicks enough to build a flinch over a long bench session, and dry practice is where trigger control improves anyway. Our A-Zoom 30-06 Springfield snap caps make that possible indoors through the off season.

Keep the brass from Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr Soft Point and keep it separate. An ammo box for the 270 and 30-06 case family stops fired cases mixing with loaded rounds in a pack, which is a small habit that prevents a bad surprise in the field.

Check the rules if you hunt out of state. A few jurisdictions set minimum calibre or bullet weight for elk and a handful restrict semi-automatic rifles for big game. A 165 grain 30-06 clears essentially all of them, but it is worth confirming before a trip.

Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr Soft Point is the box to buy if you want one load that handles whitetail in November and is still honest ammunition if an elk tag comes through. Proven Hornady bullet, sensible velocity, reloadable brass, and a price that leaves room to practise. Ships from our licensed inventory in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, with adult signature required on delivery.

On supply, Ammo Inc produces in batches and the 30-06 hunting loads move quickly through September and October. If a lot groups well in your rifle, buy enough of that lot for sighting in and the season together rather than assuming a restock before opening day.

Stored cool and dry, centrefire rifle ammunition will outlast the rifle. The one thing worth avoiding is heat cycling in a car trunk through a summer.
