Description

Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST pairs the most useful bullet weight in the cartridge with the higher ballistic coefficient of a polymer tip. A 165 grain Hornady Super Shock Tip at 2,960 feet per second, twenty rounds on reloadable brass, part number 3006165SSTA20. Of the four 30-06 loads in this line, it is the one that covers the most ground.

Four 30-06 Loads, and Which One You Want

This line offers two bullet weights in two constructions and the differences are worth understanding before you choose. At 150 grains the load is faster and flatter and is aimed at deer. At 165 it carries more weight into heavy shoulder and stays useful on elk. Independently of weight, the plain InterLock soft point opens more gradually while the tipped SST opens fast and flies flatter.

That makes Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST the combination with the broadest coverage. It has the weight for large game, the tip for trajectory, and enough velocity to matter at distance. Our 165 grain Hunt SP is the gentler opening alternative at the same weight, and the 150 grain SST is the flatter, lighter option if deer are the only thing on the licence.

The bullet in Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST is a cup and core design with an InterLock ring and a polymer tip that drives back into the core on impact. It is not a bonded or monolithic bullet, so on a heavy quartering shot through bone at close range it will shed more weight than a premium controlled expansion design would. At sensible ranges on deer and elk it does the job it is built for.

Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST Specifications

The 2,960 fps figure for Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST comes from Ammo Inc for part number 3006165SSTA20 and is measured from a test barrel. That works out to roughly 3,210 foot-pounds at the muzzle by calculation, though the maker does not publish an energy figure. A 22 inch hunting rifle will chronograph somewhat under the listed velocity, which is normal.

The velocity of Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST is brisk for the weight, close to what a Superformance load delivers and about 170 fps above a standard factory load at this weight. The extra speed is where the flatter trajectory comes from, and it also means a sharper recoil impulse.

The Garand warning applies here as with every modern commercial 30-06 hunting load. Do not put it through an M1. The rifle was built around the original service pressure curve, and the slow burning powders used in hunting ammunition keep port pressure high enough to bend or break an operating rod.

Practical Notes for an Elk Capable 30-06

Be honest about what a tipped cup and core bullet does on a big animal up close. On a broadside elk at a hundred yards it works. On a heavy quartering shot at forty, a bonded or monolithic bullet will hold together better. If elk are the main event rather than a possibility, consider stepping to a premium controlled expansion load and keep this one for deer.

Confirm zero with Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST specifically. A 165 grain SST at 2,960 fps does not print where a 150 grain load does, and it will not print where the untipped 165 does either. Two or three rounds on paper each season settles all of it.

Set your range limit from field positions, not a bench. This load carries plenty of energy well past 300 yards, but the limit is how steadily you can hold from sticks or kneeling on a cold morning, and that is a much shorter number for most people.

Practise dry through the off season. A 30-06 kicks enough to build a flinch over a long bench session, and trigger control improves without ammunition anyway. Our A-Zoom 30-06 Springfield snap caps make that possible indoors.

Keep and sort the brass from Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST. An ammo box for the 270 and 30-06 family keeps fired cases apart from loaded rounds in a pack, which stops the classic mistake of chambering an empty in the field.

If you want one 30-06 load that handles whitetail in November and is still legitimate ammunition if an elk tag comes through, Ammo Inc 30-06 165gr SST is the pick of this line. Proven Hornady bullet, brisk velocity, reloadable brass, and priced so that sighting in properly does not hurt. Ships from our licensed inventory in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, with adult signature required on delivery.

On supply, Ammo Inc runs production in batches and the 30-06 hunting loads clear shelves through early autumn. If a lot groups well in your rifle, buy enough of it for sighting in and the season together, because the next run may print to a slightly different place.
