Description
The Fiocchi 20VIPH8 VIP Heavy 20ga shell, item 20VIPH8, is a 20 gauge, 2-3/4 inch target load carrying 7/8 oz of #8 lead shot at a rated 1250 fps. It comes from Fiocchi’s VIP family, the brand’s competition-grade target line.
Fiocchi 20VIPH8 VIP Heavy 20ga Overview
VIP is Fiocchi’s competition target line, and the Heavy version pushes the payload and speed for shooters who want extra reach. This 20 gauge shell drives a full 7/8 ounce of #8 shot at about 1,250 fps, a quicker pace than standard 20 gauge practice shells. Fiocchi builds VIP loads with premium components, including harder shot and quality wads, aimed at tight, uniform patterns and consistent breaks over long events. For sporting clays and skeet shooters who run a 20 gauge in competition, it gives a noticeable step up from value practice ammunition.
Shot Size and Pattern
Number 8 shot is slightly smaller than 7.5, so the same payload carries more pellets. That denser pattern is an advantage on close and mid-range targets such as skeet, five-stand and the near stations of a sporting course, though each pellet carries a little less energy at long range. Pattern your gun on paper at the distances you shoot most, and match your choke to the target: open chokes for close stations, tighter chokes for longer yardage.
Payload and Recoil
In a 20 gauge, 7/8 ounce is the standard full target charge. It gives a well-filled pattern from the smaller bore while keeping recoil low, which is a big part of why 20 gauge guns are so popular with youth, smaller-framed adults and anyone shooting long days. At a rated 1250 fps this is a fast target load. The higher speed shortens the lead you need on crossing and quartering targets, while adding some recoil compared with slower shells of the same weight.
Shotgun Compatibility
Fire this shell only in 20 gauge shotguns with a chamber of 2-3/4 inches or longer. It runs in break-action and pump guns without concern, and most gas-operated semi-autos cycle it reliably. Some inertia-driven and older recoil-operated designs prefer heavier loads, so test a box in your gun before match day. Never place a shell in a gun of a different gauge; a smaller shell can slip into a larger barrel and cause a dangerous obstruction.
Practice and Competition
This is a target and competition load. It is well suited to registered skeet and sporting clays, five-stand and other clays competition with a 20 gauge. Many hunters also use similar lead loads on doves and other small upland birds, but check your state regulations for legal shot types, and remember that lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl.
Consistency and Value
Premium target shells cost more than practice loads, so many shooters train with value ammunition and save VIP shells for matches. If you do, pattern both loads and confirm they shoot to the same point of impact. Keeping a case of one VIP lot for the season ensures you see the same feel and timing on every competition day.
Storage and Care
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Heat and humidity can affect powder and primers over time, and crushed or split hulls should never be fired. Rotate older boxes forward so they get used first.
