Description

NobelSport 20ga Steel Waterfowl 4 Shot is the small shot option in this line and, for a lot of 20 gauge duck hunters, the better one. One ounce of number 4 steel at 1450 fps from a 3 inch magnum hull, loaded around a proprietary tube wad. The 20 gauge cannot carry many pellets, so choosing a size that puts more of them in the pattern is usually the smarter call. Twenty five rounds to the box.

Pellet Count Matters More in a 20
A one ounce charge is the fundamental constraint of 20 gauge waterfowling. There is only so much shot in the shell, and every step up in pellet size takes pellets out of the pattern. Number 4 steel holds substantially more pellets than number 2 in the same weight, and on teal, wood ducks and mallards decoying inside thirty five yards, that density is what kills cleanly rather than crippling.
The conversion from lead is worth keeping in mind. Steel is roughly a third less dense, so number 4 steel behaves broadly like number 6 lead used to. That places it squarely in the range where duck hunters shot for decades before non toxic requirements, and it works for the same reasons it always did.
The 1450 fps velocity does the heavy lifting that pellet mass cannot. Starting a light pellet fast means it arrives with more energy and the lead you have to give a crossing bird is shorter. That combination is what makes a small pellet 20 gauge steel duck load viable at all, and it is why this line runs faster than most.

Honest Notes on 20 Gauge Steel
Know where it stops. Number 4 steel sheds energy quickly and past about thirty five yards it starts wounding rather than killing. If you shoot big mallards at the edge of range or the occasional goose, step up to number 2 and accept the thinner pattern. Using NobelSport 20ga Steel Waterfowl 4 Shot beyond its range is the most common way people cripple birds with a 20 gauge.
Check the chamber and the barrel before ordering. This is a 3 inch shell and many 20 gauge guns are 2 3/4 inch only. Separately, older fixed choke barrels were never proofed for steel and can be bulged by it. Both take a minute to confirm.
Open the choke. Steel patterns tighter than lead and a 20 gauge bore concentrates it further still. Improved cylinder is often the right answer over decoys, and modified is about as tight as most people should go. Full choke with steel in a small bore is rarely helpful.
Pattern it before the season. With only one ounce of shot you have very little margin, and knowing exactly how many pellets land in a thirty inch circle at thirty and forty yards tells you your real effective range. It takes one afternoon and it is the difference between clean kills and lost birds.
We also stock this shell in number 2 shot for bigger ducks, and the Heavy Game high velocity lead loads cover upland work in the same gauge. NobelSport publishes its catalogue on the NobelSport Ammunition website.
