Taking a 20 Gauge Waterfowling
The 20 gauge has become a genuinely viable duck gun over the last decade, largely because 3 inch chambers and better wad design let a one ounce steel charge do work that used to need a 12. This shell is that argument in practice: number 2 steel at 1450 fps, which is fast enough to keep pellet energy up at the ranges decoying ducks are actually shot.
Number 2 is the general purpose steel size for ducks. Steel is roughly a third less dense than lead, so the rule of thumb is to go two sizes larger than the lead you would have used, which puts number 2 steel in the same practical bracket as number 4 lead. It handles mallards and pintails and will take a close goose, though a dedicated goose hunter should be shooting BB.
The tube wad is the part that makes a 20 gauge steel duck load work. Steel pellets are hard and will score a barrel if they touch it, so the wad has to fully shroud the shot column all the way out. NobelSport designed theirs specifically for this, and it is also what keeps patterns from opening prematurely at 1450 fps.

Honest Notes on 20 Gauge Steel
Be honest about the range limit. One ounce of number 2 steel is not many pellets. A 12 gauge 3 inch load carries 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 ounces of the same size, which is twenty to twenty five percent more pattern, and that difference shows up past forty yards. NobelSport 20ga Steel Waterfowl 2 Shot is excellent on decoying ducks inside forty and it is the wrong tool for pass shooting.
Check the chamber and the barrel. This is a 3 inch shell and plenty of 20 gauge guns are 2 3/4 inch only. Separately, older fixed choke 20 gauge barrels were never proofed for steel and can be damaged by it. Both are quick things to confirm and expensive things to get wrong.
Choke selection leans open. Steel patterns tighter than lead through the same constriction, and a small bore concentrates it further. Improved cylinder or modified is usually right for birds working a spread, and full choke with steel in a 20 gauge often produces a pattern with gaps a duck can slip through.
Recoil in a light 20 gauge is more than people expect from a one ounce load at 1450 fps. If you are shooting a six pound gun from a cramped blind, expect it to move you, and factor that into how many shells you plan to fire in a morning.
We also stock this shell in number 4 shot for smaller ducks, and the Heavy Game high velocity lead loads cover upland work in the same gauge. NobelSport publishes its catalogue on the NobelSport Ammunition website.
NobelSport 20ga Steel Waterfowl 2 Shot suits duck hunters who prefer a 20 gauge, youth and smaller framed shooters in the blind, and anyone shooting over decoys inside forty yards. MAG5 Firearms is a family owned FFL in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Boxes ship where state and local law allows.
