Description

The Barnes VOR-TX LR 300 Win Mag 190gr LRX BT is the long range load for the most popular magnum in North America. An all copper LRX leaves the muzzle at roughly 2880 fps carrying about 3500 ft-lbs of energy, behind a 0.499 G1 ballistic coefficient. The 300 Winchester Magnum has been the default elk cartridge for fifty years, and this is the bullet that extends its useful range without changing anything else. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX LR 300 Win Mag 190gr LRX BT Overview

The LRX is the long range member of the Barnes copper family, and the difference from a TTSX is functional rather than cosmetic. The hollow cavity beneath the polymer tip is deeper and shaped to open at considerably lower impact velocities, down around 1600 fps instead of the 2000 or so a standard copper hunting bullet needs.

That is the constraint that actually limits a monolithic bullet at distance. Trajectory is a solved problem with any decent ballistic solver; what is not solved is a bullet arriving at 600 yards too slowly to peel back into petals. The LRX design pushes that boundary considerably further out.

190 Grain Long Range X Bullet Performance

At 190 grains this is heavier than the 180 grain loads most 300 Win Mag shooters have used for decades, and the extra weight buys both sectional density and ballistic coefficient. A longer bullet with a boat tail and secant nose holds velocity better and drifts less in wind, which is where shots are actually lost at distance.

Barnes machines relief grooves into the bearing surface of the Barnes VOR-TX LR 300 Win Mag 190gr LRX projectile. The grooves reduce bore contact, lowering pressure and cutting copper fouling, which helps a long solid bullet group well out of a standard hunting rifle.

Why Hunters Choose 300 Winchester Magnum Long Range Ammo

The 300 Winchester Magnum fits a standard length magnum action, feeds reliably, and is stocked in every sporting goods store on the continent. Barrel life runs to a few thousand rounds rather than the thousand or so an Ultra Magnum manages, and recoil, while firm, is manageable in a rifle of normal hunting weight.

That combination is why it remains the most sensible magnum choice for most hunters. This 300 Winchester Magnum long range ammo gives it a modern bullet without asking you to buy a new rifle, learn a new cartridge or accept a burned out barrel after two seasons of practice.

A note on ballistic coefficient. Barnes publishes 0.499 G1 for this loading and a slightly different figure for the same 190 grain bullet in the 300 Remington Ultra Magnum. BC is measured over a velocity range, so a faster loading can return a marginally different number. Use the figure published for the load you are actually shooting.

Range Notes For This All Copper Big Game Bullet

Chronograph your rifle before building a drop chart. Published velocity comes from a test barrel, and a 24 inch sporter will often run 50 to 80 fps under it. At 600 yards that difference matters.

Use the G7 figure of 0.259 if your ballistic solver accepts it. For a long boat tailed bullet the G7 drag model is a considerably better match to real flight than G1, and the improvement shows up past 500 yards.

Zero with this exact load and foul a clean barrel with a round or two first. The Barnes VOR-TX LR 300 Win Mag 190gr LRX stays above its expansion threshold past 650 yards from a full length barrel, which is beyond where most hunters should be shooting at an animal in field conditions.
