Description

The Weatherby 307 Alpine ST 338 RPM is the heavy game rifle of the Alpine line. It pairs the Model 307 action and a PEAK 44 carbon fiber stock with a 24 inch Sendero contour steel barrel chambered in 338 Weatherby RPM, and an Accubrake DST fitted from the factory. Weight is 6.9 pounds bare, overall length is 44 inches and capacity is four rounds. The UPC is 747115463305. MAG5 Firearms lists it for elk, moose and bear hunters who carry their own rifle.

What 338 RPM Actually Does

338 weatherby rpm is a Rebated Precision Magnum, which means a fat case head on a standard length action rather than a true magnum bolt face and a long action. The practical result is 338 caliber terminal performance in a lighter, shorter rifle than a 338 Winchester Magnum needs, with a little less velocity and noticeably less recoil. For an elk and bear rifle you carry on foot, that combination makes a great deal of sense.

This is a serious big game cartridge, not a deer round. A 225 to 250 grain 338 bullet at the velocities this case produces delivers penetration and energy that a 30 caliber has to work hard to match, and it is a genuine answer for moose, big bears and elk at the ranges most people actually shoot them. On lighter game a Weatherby 307 Alpine ST 338 RPM is simply more than is needed and it will cost you meat.

The rest of the rifle is the standard Alpine ST package. The peak 44 carbon stock has a vertical grip, an ambidextrous palm swell and a 3D-Hex recoil pad, and the metalwork is Graphite Black Cerakote throughout. The action is the Weatherby Model 307: two lugs, an M16 style extractor, tool-less bolt disassembly and a Remington 700 footprint. The trigger is an externally adjustable TriggerTech field unit.

Recoil, Ammunition and Honest Limits

Be realistic about recoil. A 338 caliber magnum in a 6.9 pound rifle is a lot of gun, and while the accubrake dst removes a great deal of the push, this is not a rifle most people will enjoy shooting fifty rounds through in an afternoon. A Weatherby 307 Alpine ST 338 RPM is a rifle you sight in carefully, confirm a cold bore zero with, and then carry. Plan practice sessions accordingly and use a lighter rifle for volume shooting.

The brake also makes it very loud, which matters more here than on a mild cartridge. Hearing protection is mandatory at the bench and it is genuinely inconsiderate to fire one next to someone without warning them first. If you hunt with a partner, discuss the Weatherby 307 Alpine ST 338 RPM brake beforehand. The muzzle thread is 5 8 by 24 if you ever want to swap the brake for a thread protector and accept the additional recoil.

Ammunition is the real constraint. 338 Weatherby RPM is a relatively new proprietary cartridge and factory loads come from Weatherby, so availability is thinner than a 338 Winchester Magnum and prices are higher. Buy enough of one load to sight your Weatherby 307 Alpine ST 338 RPM in, build a drop chart and hunt for two seasons. If ammunition availability in remote country worries you, a 300 Winchester Magnum is the pragmatic alternative.

Who Should Buy It

A Weatherby 307 Alpine ST 338 RPM is for the hunter going after elk, moose, big bears or plains game where bullet weight and penetration matter more than trajectory. It gives you that capability in a rifle light enough to carry all day, which is genuinely rare in this caliber class. Full factory specifications are published by Weatherby.

If you want the same rifle in something you can shoot often and feed anywhere, the 240 Weatherby Magnum version is the opposite end of the same line. For elk without the ammunition logistics problem, the 300 Winchester Magnum chassis rifle is worth comparing. Browse the rest of our rifles.

Practical notes. Fit a scope with genuinely good eye relief, because a Weatherby 307 Alpine ST 338 RPM at this weight will punish a short setup. Choose a bonded or monolithic bullet built for heavy game. And do your practice from field positions with a limited round count rather than long bench sessions, because flinch developed at the bench follows you into the field.
