Description

Weatherby 307 Adventure SD 270 Weatherby Magnum rifle with fancy walnut stock, rosewood forend tip and Graphite Black Cerakote barreled action

The Weatherby 307 Adventure SD in 270 Weatherby Magnum is what happens when a modern, mass-produced action gets dressed in an old-school Weatherby stock. Fancy walnut, a rosewood forend tip and grip cap, maple diamond inlays and white spacers give it the look of a rifle from the Roy Weatherby era, while the 307 action, TriggerTech trigger, and Accubrake underneath it are entirely current.

Weatherby 307 Adventure SD Action and Trigger

The Model 307 uses a two-lug, fully cylindrical receiver with a 90 degree bolt throw. That cylindrical footprint is the important part: it accepts Remington 700 pattern bases and aftermarket stocks and chassis, which is a first for Weatherby and the reason the 307 line has caught on so quickly with people who like to tinker. The recoil lug is a separate piece, the bolt has a plunger ejector, and the whole thing is machined to tolerances that support Weatherby sub-MOA guarantee.

The trigger is a TriggerTech Field unit with the company frictionless release. It ships set from the factory and adjusts externally down to about 2.5 pounds without pulling the barreled action out of the stock. On a rifle chambered in a hard-kicking magnum, a clean, predictable break does more for practical accuracy than almost any other single component.

Barrel, Brake, and the 270 Weatherby Magnum Cartridge

Barrel length is 26 inches with a 2 inch Accubrake threaded on for 28 inches total, and the muzzle is cut 1/2-28 so the brake can come off. Twist is 1:10 in a Mag Sporter contour. Weatherby rates the Accubrake at up to 53 percent felt recoil reduction, which turns a cartridge that is genuinely stout in an unbraked rifle into something most shooters can run comfortably from the bench.

The 270 Weatherby Magnum itself dates to 1943 and remains one of the flattest-shooting standard-diameter cartridges available. It pushes 130 to 150 grain .277 bullets several hundred feet per second past a 270 Winchester, which translates into less holdover and more retained energy at the ranges western hunting tends to happen. The long barrel on this rifle is there specifically to let the cartridge produce those numbers rather than burn powder past the muzzle.

Why Buyers Choose It

Most rifles at this price point ask you to pick between good looks and modern function. This one does not. You get real walnut with real inlay work, and you also get a receiver that takes common bases, a trigger from a company that makes triggers for a living, and a brake that makes the cartridge civilized. It is a rifle you can hand down and also a rifle you can put a modern scope on tonight without hunting for proprietary parts.

Who Should Buy It

Open-country big game hunters are the obvious audience. Elk, mule deer, and pronghorn across canyons are exactly what 270 Weatherby Magnum was built for, and a 7.6 pound rifle is still carryable. It also suits the buyer who has always wanted a classic-looking Weatherby but did not want to pay Mark V Deluxe money. If you hunt thick timber and never shoot past 150 yards, the 28 inch muzzle-to-brake length will feel like a lot of rifle, and something shorter will serve you better.
