Description
The Volquartsen Superlite 17 HMR pairs the flattest-shooting common rimfire cartridge with a 16.75-inch carbon-fiber-sleeved tension barrel and a 2.25-pound trigger. The whole rifle weighs 5 pounds 6 ounces.
17 HMR Deserves a Rifle Like This
The 17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire drives a 17-grain bullet at around 2,550 feet per second, which gives a trajectory so flat that holdover barely matters inside 150 yards. It is arguably the best small-varmint cartridge ever put in a rimfire case. What it has always lacked is a semi-automatic rifle accurate enough to exploit it. The Volquartsen Superlite 17 HMR is that rifle.
Carbon Fiber Tension Barrel
The barrel is a THM tension design: a thin steel liner held under tension inside a rigid carbon fiber sleeve. Tensioning damps vibration and stiffens the assembly dramatically, which is the same principle used on serious target rifles. Carbon fiber does that job at a fraction of the weight of steel. The result is match-grade rigidity in a barrel light enough to carry all day, with a 1:9 twist correct for 17 HMR.
TG2000 Trigger
Volquartsen’s TG2000 trigger group breaks at 2.25 pounds with no creep. On a cartridge this flat and this precise, the trigger is what determines whether you actually hit a prairie dog at 150 yards or merely could have. Factory rimfire semi-auto triggers are typically twice this weight with visible creep. This one is fitted from the factory, not bought as an upgrade.
Integral Picatinny Rail
The receiver is Type III hard anodized aluminum with the Picatinny rail machined directly into it at zero MOA. Nothing bolted on means nothing to work loose, and a scope mounted here stays where you put it. No iron sights are fitted, which is the right call on a rifle built entirely around glass.
Threaded Muzzle
The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28 and wears a removable Forward Blow compensator in black anodized aluminum. Take it off and a rimfire suppressor mounts directly. A suppressed 17 HMR is a genuinely pleasant thing to shoot, and it keeps a prairie dog town from clearing out after the first shot.
Nine-Round Magazines
The rifle feeds from nine-round magazines with one included. For varmint work where multiple targets present themselves in quick succession, the combination of a semi-automatic action, a flat trajectory and an excellent trigger is difficult to beat. At 5 pounds 6 ounces, the Volquartsen Superlite 17 HMR is a walking rifle rather than a bench gun, which is exactly what varminting on foot demands.

Who Should Buy It
This is a varmint rifle for prairie dogs, ground squirrels, rock chucks and foxes, and for anyone who wants the most accurate semi-automatic rimfire available. It is also light enough to carry across a field all day without complaint.
The Volquartsen Superlite 17 HMR is expensive and built to order. The 17 HMR cartridge is also more expensive than 22 LR and its very light bullet is affected by wind more than people expect, so it is not the choice for high-volume plinking.
Shooters who want cheap volume should compare a 22 LR, and anyone who prefers a heavier bullet for wind should look at the 22 Magnum version in our catalog. Every firearm we list ships to your chosen FFL and is transferred in accordance with federal and state law.
