Description

The Underwood 9mm +P 90gr Xtreme Defender is the middle child of the Platinum Edition line, and for a lot of shooters it is the sensible one. It keeps the solid copper, nose-fluted projectile that made the Xtreme Defender family popular, but adds 22 grains over the 68-grain load for a slower, heavier bullet that many carry guns simply handle better.

How the Underwood 9mm +P 90gr Xtreme Defender Works
Nothing about this bullet expands. Four radial flutes machined into the nose of a one-piece copper projectile push tissue and fluid violently outward as the round drives forward, carving a permanent wound cavity that Underwood measures at roughly twice the diameter of a conventional expanding bullet. There is no hollow point cavity to pack with denim or drywall dust, which is exactly the failure mode this design was built to sidestep.
That barrier indifference is the practical selling point. Sheet metal, wallboard and automotive glass reliably wreck jacketed hollow points; a fluted solid shrugs them off and keeps its shape. Penetration lands inside the FBI protocol window rather than overshooting it, which is a harder balance to hit than the marketing usually admits.
Platinum Edition is not a paint job. The case is nickel-plated brass and the projectile wears a proprietary corrosion-resistant coating. In storage that means no verdigris and no darkening after a year in a magazine, in humid climates or near salt water. In the gun it means dry-film lubricity that eases feeding in tight chambers and over modified feed ramps, plus reduced barrel wear.
Specifications and Ballistics
Underwood rates the Underwood 9mm +P 90gr Xtreme Defender at 1,475 fps and 435 ft-lbs, and Chattanooga Shooting Supplies lists the same numbers, so this one is not in dispute. Against the 68-grain +P load in the same family, you trade roughly 300 fps of muzzle velocity for a heavier bullet and a calmer recoil impulse that is easier to drive fast. Sectional density is better too, which is worth something on the deep end of the penetration curve.

Field Notes and Carry Considerations
Underwood advises against running their +P and +P+ 9mm ammunition through aftermarket SIG P365 conversion barrels; all of their testing and validation is done with factory barrels. If your pistol wears a drop-in barrel from a third party, ask that barrel maker before you feed it +P.
Zero confirmation still matters. The Underwood 9mm +P 90gr Xtreme Defender is closer in weight to standard 115-grain practice ammo than the 68-grain load is, so point of impact shift is usually smaller, but it is worth verifying with a box through your own carry gun. Micro-compacts with light recoil springs deserve a function check as well.
The lead-free copper construction is a genuine convenience for indoor ranges and for shooters in states tightening non-lead rules.
Prefer more speed and less bullet weight? The 9mm +P 68gr Xtreme Defender runs several hundred feet per second faster, and the same fluted solid design scales up to the 10mm 115gr Xtreme Defender. Manufacturer test data is published by Underwood Ammo.
For a carry 9mm that needs to work through barriers without punishing recoil, the Underwood 9mm +P 90gr Xtreme Defender is a well-balanced pick. MAG5 Firearms stocks it in the 20-round Platinum Edition box, manufacturer item UB876.
