Description

Underwood 10mm 115gr Xtreme Defender nickel plated 10mm Auto ammunition

Underwood 10mm 115gr Xtreme Defender takes a very different approach to terminal performance than a hollow point. Instead of expanding, the 115 grain Lehigh designed Xtreme Defender is a solid copper monolithic projectile with deep radial flutes that force fluid outward as it penetrates. Underwood drives it to 1700 fps for 738 ft-lbs, loaded in nickel plated brass and packed twenty rounds to the box.

How the Xtreme Defender Bullet Works

A conventional hollow point relies on expansion, and expansion relies on hitting soft tissue at the right velocity without plugging the cavity first. The Xtreme Defender solid monolithic design sidesteps that entirely. The flutes act like nozzles, pushing displaced fluid sideways at high pressure and creating a wound cavity considerably wider than the bullet, while the solid copper body keeps driving straight to reliable depth.

The practical consequence is consistency. Because nothing has to open, this 10mm Auto self defense ammo behaves much the same through heavy clothing, through an intermediate barrier, or in a short barrelled pistol where a hollow point might not reach expansion velocity. That last point matters for anyone carrying a compact 10mm rather than a full size Glock 20 or 1911.

The tradeoff is that 115 grains is very light for 10mm. Recoil is mild by 10mm standards and muzzle rise is easy to control, but sectional density is low and the bullet is not intended for hunting or for deep penetration on heavy game. Underwood sells the 150 grain Xtreme Hunter for that job. Know which problem you are solving before you choose.

Underwood 10mm 115gr Xtreme Defender Specifications

Nickel plated brass cases resist corrosion from holster sweat and feed a little more smoothly than plain brass, which is why Underwood uses them for the Platinum Edition line. They are still boxer primed and reloadable, though the plating shortens case life relative to plain brass.

Honest Notes on This Load

Function testing is not optional with any monolithic bullet. The Xtreme Defender profile is longer than a lead core bullet of the same weight and the nose shape is unusual, so feed reliability varies by pistol. Run at least fifty rounds through the exact gun and magazines you carry before trusting Underwood 10mm 115gr Xtreme Defender ammunition for defense. That is true of any carry load, but doubly so here.

Cost is the second consideration. Solid copper bullets are machined rather than swaged and the ammunition is priced accordingly. Most people buy one box to verify function and point of impact, then carry it and practise with cheaper full metal jacket. That is a sensible approach as long as you confirm the two shoot to a similar zero at defensive distance.

Overpenetration deserves an honest mention. Because the bullet does not expand, it holds velocity and tends to penetrate deeply and straight. In a home defense context with neighbours or family behind the walls, that is a genuine consideration, and it is one of the reasons some trainers still prefer a conventional expanding bullet for indoor use.

Finally, check your local rules. A handful of jurisdictions restrict solid copper or so called armour piercing handgun ammunition, and although the Xtreme Defender is not classified as armour piercing under federal law, local ordinances vary. Confirm before you order, and confirm again if you travel with it.

If you want a heavier bullet for hunting, look at the 150 grain Xtreme Hunter Platinum Edition, and for trail carry against snakes we stock a 10mm bismuth shotshell. Full published data is on the Underwood Ammo product page.
