Description

This is the Credo scaled up: a bigger tube, more magnification, and the one feature the 1-6x does not have. The Trijicon Credo 1-8×28 Coyote MRAD is model CR828-C-2900056, a 1-8×28 in coyote brown on a 34mm tube, with the MRAD segmented circle in the first focal plane and illumination you can switch between red and green depending on what you are looking at.

Switchable Red and Green Illumination

Most illuminated scopes commit you to one colour at the point of purchase. The Trijicon Credo 1-8×28 Coyote MRAD gives you five red settings and five green settings from the same dial, which sounds like a gimmick until you shoot in changeable conditions. Green reads brighter to the eye and wins in daylight and against brown and grey backgrounds. Red preserves night adaptation and separates better against green foliage or a green painted steel target. Being able to change your mind in the field rather than in the shop is a genuine advantage.

The reticle is the same MRAD segmented circle used across the Credo line, sitting in the first focal plane so that every subtension stays correct at every magnification rather than only at full power. At 1x the broken ring is large and bright enough to drive like a red dot; at 8x it shrinks back and leaves the fine centre cross available for precise work. That is the whole argument for a segmented circle in FFP, and it is executed well here.

The step up to a 34mm tube is not cosmetic. A larger tube gives the erector more room to move, which is where adjustment range comes from, and it adds stiffness to a scope that is 25.6 ounces and going on a rifle that may get knocked about. It also means 34mm rings, which are less common and generally dearer than 30mm, so factor that into the budget.

Trijicon Credo 1-8×28 Coyote MRAD Specifications

Adjustments are a tenth of a MRAD per click with 29.1 MRAD of total travel, matching the MRAD reticle so that reticle and turret speak the same language. Eye relief runs 3 to 4 inches across the range, which is slightly shorter at the low end than the 1-6x and worth knowing if you are mounting on a rifle with heavy recoil. Exit pupil falls from 0.46 inches at 1x to 0.14 inches at 8x.

Illumination on the Trijicon Credo 1-8×28 Coyote MRAD runs from one CR2032 and Trijicon quotes 39 hours on red and 94 hours on green. Those are short numbers and the difference between them is real: green LEDs reach a given apparent brightness on less current, which is why the same battery lasts more than twice as long driving green.

Honest Notes on the Trijicon Credo 1-8×28 Coyote MRAD

Battery life is the weak point and it is weaker here than on the 1-6x. Thirty nine hours on red is roughly a day and a half of continuous running. There is no motion sensor to sleep the illumination when the rifle is still, so the habit has to come from you: switch it off every time the rifle goes down, and carry spare cells. If you are the sort of person who finds flat batteries in everything, this is the specification that should give you pause about the Trijicon Credo 1-8×28 Coyote MRAD.

Twenty five and a half ounces is a lot of scope. Add 34mm rings and a base and you are putting close to two pounds on the rifle, high and central. On a duty carbine or a range gun that is unremarkable. On something you carry all day it is a different conversation, and a 1-6x on a 30mm tube saves you meaningful weight for a modest loss of magnification.

Thirty four millimetre rings are the hidden cost. They are less widely stocked than 30mm and typically more expensive, and if you already own a drawer of 30mm rings none of them will work. Price a mount before you commit rather than after the scope arrives.

Finally, first focal plane at 1x behaves the same way here as on any FFP low power variable: the reticle is necessarily thin at the bottom of the range and a true red dot remains faster inside fifty yards. The segmented circle mitigates it well, and 1-8x gives you real reach at the top end, but it is still a compromise between two jobs rather than a perfect answer to either.
