Description

The Taylors 1892 Rifle 357 Magnum is the full length rifle version of the Browning designed 1892 action, with a 24 inch blued octagon barrel, a case hardened frame and hand fitted walnut. It holds twelve rounds in the tube magazine, measures 42.13 inches overall and weighs 7.3 pounds. Taylors lists it as SKU LC1/220036 and the UPC is 839665005590, with manufacturing by Chiappa in Italy. MAG5 Firearms stocks it for cowboy action shooters, ranch owners and anyone who wants a classic lever gun that is genuinely useful rather than decorative.

Rifle Rather Than Carbine

The difference between this and the 20 inch carbine version is not cosmetic. A 24 inch octagon barrel adds velocity, adds two rounds of magazine capacity and lengthens the sight radius, which makes iron sight shooting noticeably easier at distance. It also adds muzzle weight, and that is the real reason target and cowboy action shooters choose the rifle: the extra mass of a Taylors 1892 Rifle 357 Magnum steadies the gun and slows the muzzle between shots on a stage.

As a lever action 357 magnum this gets the most out of the cartridge. Magnum loads that leave a revolver at around 1400 feet per second will often clear 1800 out of a barrel this length, which turns a pistol round into a legitimate deer and hog cartridge inside about 125 yards. Load 38 Special instead and the same rifle becomes quiet, cheap and almost recoilless, which makes a Taylors 1892 Rifle 357 Magnum one of the best teaching tools available.

The Taylors 1892 Rifle 357 Magnum is finished the way these rifles should be. The case hardened frame, buttplate and trigger guard carry a real bone charcoal style color pattern rather than a printed finish, so no two are identical. The walnut stock rifle furniture is fitted and finished by hand to each barreled action, which is why the wood to metal fit on these is better than the price suggests.

Sights, Feeding and Honest Limits

Sights are a dovetail blade up front and a dovetail buckhorn at the rear. Buckhorns are fast and forgiving at close range and they do crowd the target at distance, which is the standard complaint and the reason many owners eventually fit a tang peep sight. The barrel is not drilled for a scope, and putting optics on a Taylors 1892 Rifle 357 Magnum means a rail that replaces the rear sight or a side mount, neither of which flatters the rifle.

Tube magazine feeding rewards the right ammunition. Flat nose and semi wadcutter profiles cycle best, wide mouthed hollow points can catch at the loading gate, and very short 38 Special cases sometimes need a firm deliberate stroke. This is characteristic of the 1892 design rather than a defect in the Taylors 1892 Rifle 357 Magnum, but it does mean you should run a box of your intended load through the magazine before trusting it in competition or in the field.

Two safety and handling points. The rifle uses an internal firing pin and a half cock notch, with no crossbolt safety, so carry it hammer down on an empty chamber or at half cock and treat the notch as a carry position rather than a safety device. Second, the case hardened frame is a finish that patinas and is not corrosion proof, so wipe it down after wet days and keep a light film of oil on it.

Who Should Buy It

A Taylors 1892 Rifle 357 Magnum makes sense for cowboy action competitors who want the longer barrel and the extra capacity, for anyone who already owns a 357 revolver and wants a rifle that shares ammunition, and for hunters working thick country inside 125 yards. It is also simply a pleasant rifle to own and shoot, which counts for something. Full specifications and the rest of the range are published by Taylors and Company.

If you want something shorter and handier for a truck or a saddle scabbard, the 20 inch Chiappa 1892 carbine is built on the same action by the same factory. If you want to mount glass, look at a modern lever gun with a drilled and tapped receiver instead. Browse the rest of our rifles to compare barrel lengths and chamberings.

Practical ownership notes. Buy ammunition that matches the job: hard cast flat nose for hogs and deer, mid weight jacketed loads for defense, and inexpensive 38 Special for practice and teaching. Keep the case hardened frame oiled, run a bore snake through the 24 inch octagon barrel after each outing, and this rifle will outlast you. A Taylors 1892 Rifle 357 Magnum is not a safe queen, it is meant to be shot.
