Description
The Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Two Tone 5.12 is the short-barrelled .454 Casull in the two-tone finish – matte stainless frame under a matte black oxide barrel shroud and cylinder. Five rounds, a Picatinny rail machined into the top of the barrel shroud, factory porting, and the cushioned-insert grip the Raging line is built around.
Five and an eighth inches is the shortest barrel Taurus puts on a Raging Hunter, which makes this the one you carry rather than the one you shoot off a bench.

What the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Two Tone 5.12 is
- Five-shot .454 Casull on the large Raging frame
- 5.12-inch ported barrel inside a black oxide shroud
- Picatinny rail machined into the top of the shroud – no mount needed
- Matte stainless steel frame against the black barrel and cylinder
- Black rubber grip with the integrated red cushion insert
- Dual cylinder lockup, front and rear
- Adjustable rear sight, transfer bar safety

What .454 Casull is, and what it does to you
- .454 Casull runs at roughly three times the chamber pressure of .45 Colt and throws a 240 to 360 grain bullet fast enough to take any animal in North America
- Out of the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Two Tone 5.12 you lose some velocity against the longer guns, and you gain a revolver you can actually wear on a belt all day
- The chamber will also take .45 Colt, which is the single most useful thing about the cartridge. You can practise all afternoon on mild loads and load the Casull when it matters
- Recoil with full-power loads is severe. The porting and the cushioned grip take the edge off and they do not make it mild
- It is very loud. A ported .454 indoors without ears is genuinely damaging, and it is unpleasant for anyone standing beside you outdoors

Practise with .45 Colt, hunt with the Casull
Feeding the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Two Tone 5.12 is worth spelling out because it changes what the gun costs to own. .454 Casull ammunition is expensive and punishing, and nobody shoots enough of it to get genuinely good. .45 Colt costs a fraction as much, recoils like a normal revolver cartridge, and fits the same chambers. Sight the gun in with your hunting load, then do the volume shooting with .45 Colt. Do not do it the other way round – a gun you only ever fire with full-power Casull is a gun you will flinch with.
One direction only: .45 Colt is safe in a .454 chamber, but .454 Casull must never be fired in a .45 Colt revolver. The case is longer, so it will not chamber, and that is the safety margin working as designed.
Both cartridges are dimensioned and pressure-rated by SAAMI.
Where it sits in the Raging Hunter range
The same barrel length in plain black is the 5.12-inch Raging Hunter in .454, and the 6.75-inch version adds velocity and sight radius. For a longer two-tone gun there is the 8.37-inch two-tone .454, and the 6-inch black Casull rounds out the line. If .454 is more cartridge than you need, the 5-inch Raging Hunter in .44 Magnum is the same gun in a far friendlier calibre.
Why the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Two Tone 5.12 earns its place
- The shortest Raging Hunter made, which makes it the one you will actually carry hunting
- Rail machined into the barrel shroud, so a red dot or a scope goes straight on
- Dual cylinder lockup, which is why these guns stay in time under full-power loads
- Two cartridges in one Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Two Tone 5.12 chamber – cheap practice, serious performance
- Three in stock
This is a hunting and backcountry revolver and nothing else. It is too big, too loud and too powerful to be a sensible defensive handgun against people, and it is not a range plinker unless you are feeding it .45 Colt.
Where it earns its keep is on a chest rig in elk country or bear country, with a red dot on the rail and a hunting load in the chambers. At that job the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Two Tone 5.12 is about as much capability as you can get in something you can carry all day without noticing the weight the way you would with an eight-inch gun.
