Description

The Taurus 917C is a metal-framed full-size 9mm at a time when almost everything else at this price is polymer. Eighteen rounds in a black anodized aluminium frame with a beavertail, a Picatinny rail, ambidextrous controls and target grips.

The Taurus 917C has a 4.30-inch barrel and a serrated steel slide, in the 92-pattern layout Taurus has been refining for decades. If you like the weight and the balance of a metal gun and do not want to pay two or three times as much for one, this is the answer.

What the Taurus 917C offers

  • The Taurus 917C holds 18+1 of 9mm Luger, which is more than most full-size pistols of any material
  • Black anodized aluminium frame, so the weight and balance are quite unlike a polymer gun
  • Beavertail at the rear of the frame, which lets you take a high grip without slide bite
  • Picatinny rail under the dust cover for a weapon light
  • Ambidextrous controls, so it suits left-handed shooters without modification
  • 4.30-inch matte black steel barrel under a serrated steel slide
  • Black target grips, checkered and slightly wider than a service panel

Why a metal frame still matters

  • Weight soaks up recoil, and the Taurus 917C has it. An aluminium-framed 9mm sits flatter in recoil than a polymer gun of the same size
  • The Taurus 917C balances differently too, with more mass in the hand and less in the slide
  • Metal frames do not flex, which some shooters find gives a more consistent feel over a long string
  • The cost is carrying weight. This is a home, range and duty-style pistol rather than a summer carry gun
  • Eighteen rounds is a genuinely high count and a real practical advantage on a nightstand gun
  • Aluminium anodising wears at the edges over years of holster use. That is cosmetic, not structural

9mm Luger is the most widely produced handgun cartridge in the world and one of the most tightly standardised, with chamber and pressure specifications published by SAAMI. In a full-size metal-framed pistol you have plenty of margin, so almost any factory load will run, though it is still worth confirming your chosen defensive round cycles in your own gun.

One thing to weigh honestly. A Taurus 917C is heavier than the polymer pistols it competes with on price, and that cuts both ways: it is more pleasant to shoot and less pleasant to carry all day. If the gun is going to live on a nightstand or in a range bag, the weight is entirely an advantage. If you want to wear it under a shirt in August, it is not the right choice.

Why this pistol earns its place

  • Eighteen rounds of 9mm, which very few pistols at any price match
  • A metal frame at a price where everything else is polymer
  • The Taurus 917C has ambidextrous controls as standard rather than as an option
  • A beavertail and a rail, both of which cost extra on many competitors
  • Weight that makes a full-size 9mm genuinely soft shooting
  • Target grips that fill the hand better than a thin service panel

Home-defence buyers, range shooters who prefer metal-framed pistols, left-handed shooters who want ambidextrous controls out of the box, and anyone who grew up on the 92 pattern. The Taurus 917C is not a carry gun and it is a very good house gun.

If you want the classic long-slide version, the Taurus PT92 with its 5-inch barrel is the original pattern, with a tungsten and walnut version and an OD Green build with G10 panels alongside it.

For a hammer-fired polymer pistol at a lower price, the Taurus TH9 is the alternative, and the striker-fired Taurus G3 is cheaper still.

Every Taurus 917C ships with the factory case, magazines, the manual and a lock. Transfers go to your FFL and our end of the paperwork is done the same day.
