Description
The Stevens 301 Turkey 410 is a single-shot break-open shotgun built for one job: sitting still against a tree and putting one load of small shot into a turkey’s head and neck at close range. Twenty-six inches of matte black barrel, a 3-inch chamber, a synthetic stock in Mossy Oak Obsession, and a Picatinny rail already fitted to the receiver.
One shot is not a limitation on a turkey gun in the way it sounds. Almost nobody fires twice at the same bird.

Why .410 works for turkey now and did not used to
- The Stevens 301 Turkey 410 works because Tungsten Super Shot changed the argument. TSS is roughly twice as dense as lead, so a much smaller pellet carries the same energy – which means a .410 payload can hold enough pellets of a lethal size to pattern properly
- With TSS loads a .410 will take a turkey cleanly inside about forty yards. With lead it will not, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing
- That makes ammunition choice the single most important decision with this gun. Buy TSS turkey loads and pattern them; do not take a cheap lead load into the woods and hope
- Pattern it before the season. Every barrel and choke combination throws a different pattern and the only way to know your range is to shoot paper at twenty, thirty and forty yards
- The light recoil is the real prize. A .410 lets a young or recoil-sensitive hunter shoot a turkey gun properly rather than flinch through it

The rail is there for a reason
The Stevens 301 Turkey 410 is aimed, not swung. You are shooting at a head and neck the size of a fist, which is a rifle problem rather than a shotgun problem, and a red dot makes it far easier than a bead. The receiver comes with the rail already fitted, so an optic costs you the optic and nothing else.
Fit the dot, then pattern the gun with it. The point of impact of a shotgun pattern rarely matches the bead, and finding that out in the field wastes a season.
Ammunition
We stock TSS turkey loads in .410, which is what this gun is built around, and .410 target loads for pattern work and clays – far cheaper than burning TSS to learn where the gun shoots. Shotshell dimensions and pressures are published by SAAMI.
Do not put 3-inch shells in a 2-1/2 inch chamber. This gun is chambered for 3 inch, so both lengths are fine here, but the reverse is not true of every .410 on the market.

This is a specialist. One shot, a long barrel and a camouflage stock make it excellent at turkey and awkward at almost everything else – it will break clays and take a rabbit, but a repeater does both better.
The honest limitation is range. Even with TSS, forty yards is a sensible ceiling and thirty is better. A twelve gauge reaches further and always will. What the Stevens 301 Turkey 410 offers instead is a gun that a small-framed or recoil-shy hunter can actually shoot well, and a hunter who can shoot well at thirty yards beats one who flinches at fifty.
