Description
The Smith Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Compact 10 Round is the compact M2.0 in the ten round configuration for capacity restricted states, with a 4 inch barrel and an optic ready slide. Frame, barrel, trigger and slide are identical to the fifteen round version; only what ships in the box changes.
Smith Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Compact 10 Round Compact Size and Optic Cut
The compact sits where most people actually carry: a 4 inch barrel gives up almost nothing in velocity to the full size gun, while the shorter slide and grip conceal considerably better under a covering garment. It is the size most manufacturers now treat as their default because it is the size most buyers choose.
The slide is cut for a red dot at the factory and ships with mounting plates, so no milling is required. On a carry pistol that matters twice over: a dot is faster to find under stress than iron sights, and a factory cut avoids both the gunsmithing bill and the warranty question that aftermarket milling raises.
M2.0 Platform Features
The M2.0 generation fixed the things owners of the original M&P asked about. Grip texture went from a smooth orange peel finish to aggressive stippling closer to skateboard tape, so the pistol stays put in wet or gloved hands. A fourth palm swell size was added, giving small, medium, medium large and large, so grip circumference can be matched to the hand rather than approximated.
Inside, a rigid stainless chassis is moulded into the polymer along most of the frame length, stiffening the frame and giving the cross pins something solid to locate against. The trigger is roughly half a pound lighter than the original with a shorter, far more distinct reset. Slide and barrel both carry Armornite, a nitride treatment that hardens the surface rather than coating it.
Fitting the Grip
The palm swell inserts are worth spending time on rather than leaving at the factory setting. Changing one takes a punch and about a minute: drive out the frame pin at the base of the backstrap, lift the insert off, fit the replacement and reinsert the pin. Most shooters assume they need the smallest that lets their finger reach the trigger, but the better test is whether the web of the hand sits centred behind the bore with the trigger finger landing on the pad rather than the joint.
Worth checking too: a grip that is too small lets the pistol shift under recoil, which costs more in follow up speed than a slightly longer trigger reach ever does. It is common for shooters to end up one size larger than they first expect.

Why Buyers Choose the Smith Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Compact 10 Round
Capacity restricted shooters usually end up choosing between a compliant magazine and a gun that fits their hand properly. This configuration removes that trade: the frame is full compact size with the complete palm swell system, and only the magazine differs. Standard capacity magazines can be added later if the owner moves somewhere they are permitted.
The four grip insert sizes deserve particular mention. Most pistols offer two or three backstraps that change the reach to the trigger; the M2.0 inserts change the circumference of the whole grip, which is what actually determines whether a hand can get a proper wrap around it.
Who Should Buy It
The Smith Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Compact 10 Round suits the concealed carrier in a capacity restricted state who wants a full size compact grip, the shooter mounting a red dot who wants a factory cut, and anyone whose hand has never quite fitted a fixed grip pistol.
