The Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport Flag is Smith & Wesson’s M&P15-22 Sport wearing a US flag Cerakote finish across the receiver and furniture. It is a dedicated 22 LR rifle built to AR-15 dimensions — not a conversion kit — so the controls, the stock and the manual of arms all transfer directly from a centerfire AR at a fraction of the ammunition cost.

The 16.5-inch barrel is threaded, which on a 22 LR is genuinely useful — rimfire is the most pleasant thing there is to shoot suppressed, if you go the NFA route. We do not sell NFA items, so a can has to come from a dealer with an SOT. A thread protector covers it otherwise.

It ships with a 25-round magazine, and spares are inexpensive. M-LOK slots take a light, a sling mount or a bipod.

Ammunition That Works

High-velocity 22 LR from CCI, Federal or Aguila runs well; bulk-pack subsonic and standard-velocity ammunition sometimes will not cycle the action reliably. Buy a few brands, find what your rifle likes, then buy that in quantity.

Rimfire also fouls faster than centerfire, so expect to clean it more often than you would a 5.56.

Optics and Setup

The full-length top rail takes red dots, LPVOs or a rimfire scope. For plinking at fifty yards a simple red dot is hard to beat and keeps the rifle light. If you plan to shoot small targets at distance, a proper rimfire scope with close parallax adjustment is worth the money.
